I've had Ollie almost 3 months and I may have to get a sharer or loaner for him already as it doesn't look like the back problem is going to be fixed anytime soon :(
So far I've had surgery done on my prolapsed discs, 2 epidurals and 2 nerve blocks for the nerve pain and none of it has worked! In fact since the last set of injection 4 weeks ago it has got a hell of alot worse. I am losing feeling in a couple of my toes and now struggling to lift things which has never happened before.
I believe the next stage for me is a disc fusion, although it wont explain the nerve pain as apparently nothing is pressing against the nerve any more. However, this if it ever does happen wont happen before April next year.
This means I wont be able to start Ollie's retraining before then at the earliest. So thinking a sharer or loaner may be the only option! I am feeling rather mean in the fact that I don't want to share him with anyone :o:rolleyes: Am I thinking in the right direction though? I got Ollie when things started to like they were improving and a friend offered him to me for free!

I love Ollie, even though I've only had him a few months.:D

Sorry for the rant! Ben and Jerry's and Baileys for anyone that reads this

No that is true, although he is feeling rather good at the moment and full of beans! I am just dying to get on board and I although no one has said I can't get on board, I don't actually feel physically up to it :(
Although if I did jump on, it may (accidently) give the doctors a nudge to sort me out sooner :D

That sounds really crap. I feel for you. I cant imagine how you must be feeling. How old is he? You say he needs retraining so like already mentioned it may do him good to have some time off, esp as weather is crap.

I certainly wouldn't rush into anything at the moment. The weather is rubbish, I'm normally someone that rides every day whatever the weather but even I'm not Plenty of horses have a winter holiday and then are brought into work in the spring. unless you back pain is causing you problems looking after him then i'd just enjoy him over winter from the ground and not making any rushed decisions.

He is a 7 year old ex racer and has had 10months off (mainly before I got him) for an injury!
I am feeling really sorry for myself, as this will be the third christmas I have gone through with back pain. I am off to hospital tomorrow night, so hopefully it will be another step in the right direction!

I know the feeling hun, but sit tight. Not worth bu&&ering it up for life for the sake of less than a handful of months.

Thanks guys, I am going to give it some thinking time and see what the hospital has to say tomorrow! I am seeing the chornic pain management team tomorrow, who said if it didnt work they would refer me for a fusion.
At the moment I am mainly managing to cope with Ollie's care and it's not interferrring with the back to much! I also have an extremely helpful YO who I can call up on my bad days to put him on full livery! It means when I'm feeling seriously down we can have a good old bonding session, like I did tonight! I think he knew something was wrong tonight and gave loads of hugs and allowed me to scratch his star, which he loves but he doesn't like you to know much haha

remember even if you get a sharer you will still be his 'mum'. Concentrate on getting yourself better- youve got lots to look forward to when your right again x

really feel for you hun. My mum has back problems (sounds very much like yours actually) im she is in constant pain and has been for years.
She wont go through with the op though as they say there a good chance it wont work and if it does, it will come back within time.

Sorry iv probably made you feel no better, but i hope they find something to help you soon x

awww cheer up hun I have the same problem as you...and may need my disc's fused but I am trying not to go down that route...so I understand what your saying...wait to see what happens 1st and then if you still feel Ollie could do with a sharer then maybe a couple days wouldn't hurt...

Hope your feeling better soonies

Hey, seven is not that old. He will be fine with a bit of time off - probably had a busy youth anyway...

Look after yourself. Sounds painful! I'm broken too - waiting for an op, with a seven year old too, that I'd hoped to get going this year!

I can understand you feel gutted, most of us on here would feel the same, but why go for a sharer, if he's an ex racer perhaps he could with time off as well and you both come back into action at the same time.

Aw I feel for you, im sure you just need to take a step back, maybe just give him winter to be a "horse" he wont mind its terrible weather so you may find it hard to get a sharer until the new year. It may well be of benefit as obv after surgery it will still be a while before you can start retraining properly. My issue would be I wouldn't want someone else retraining him, I would prefer to leave him until i could get back on board to do that. Have you got a friend who could ride occassionally to keep him ticking over or lunging him?
As for the pain (im a student physio) eventhough nothing is now pressing on the nerve i would suspect bruising from previous pressings, I would also be concerned and wanting you to get back intouch with your consultant as loss of feeling usually speeds up operations, obv depending on what hospital and where you are!!
Hope you feel better soon xx

sweetheart stop take a breath and concentrate on getting better for you & horse - **** happens ( i know that with my back) but stop take a breathe and relax - your horse aint going to come to harm for some time off and you need to take time and think longer story ie getting better so hun just try to relax try to think of hot summer evenings ( ok im joking there lol) big hugs xxxx

my mum has severe back pain and has the nerves burnt once or twice a year, seems to do the trick for her (could that be an option for you ?)

Big hugs for you XX

i wouldnt worry about working horsey , weathers cr*p at the mo :)

Chellebean, if i can reassure you at all, it will get better - I posted 6 months ago saying i was going to sell my mare due to 2 prolapsed discs, my big toe was numb and pain was awful (except after a bottle of red!) anyway, took it slowly, had shed loads of physio to strengthen my inner core (i didnt have one) and I am now back riding, and my physio (and many peeps on here said my horse is the best physio there is). I paid to see a private physio and is was the best money i ever spent....but it did take time and i still have to look after my back! Hang on in there,,,x

Hi,
I completely agree with you Tango but I have had this now for 3 years! Surgery 4 injections in my back later and I am no where further forward! In fact I've gone backwards, hence the self pity! I am hoping it will be better this time round after this surgery once they give the ok
xx

Hi Chelle
Really sorry to hear about this. Hopefully the next surgery will work. I wouldn't rush into sharing him if you don't need to financially. Because he's raced and he's not exactly old, why not just give him the time off, or just do ground work and long reining/lunging if you're up to it.. I agree with Echo Bravo. It really won't do him any harm. Blue's been off work over a year now and no sign of her starting work yet (forgot to tell you - she went back to hospital to get her sinuses rechecked and they x-rayed her fetlock which had started swelling, and found a bone chip in there, so she's waiting for more surgery which they can't do at the moment because they are snowed in and she has been up there over a week, poor girl!). But even if I can't start her til Spring, I know it won't do her any harm just learning to be a horse again. I hope you get some answers at the hospital. Chin up. xx
