Hi there, anyone heard of this or had a horse operated on because of it? My friends horse taken to Bristol tonight with suspected GPM. Any thoughts and prognosis?? Thanks

Oh dear, yes i know about it and it has a notoriously bad prognosis. It is bascially an infection of the guttoral pouch that can spread to neighbouring structures like the carotid artery and cranial nerves.
Involves lots of blood and the operation is v technical and what makes it worse is that the added stress and movement of travelling can make things a lot worse.

If he got to Langford safely then he is in the best place and hope they can fix him. Thoughts with him and his owner xx

Not good. Tricky to treat and location similar. I have my fingers crossed.

I had a pony with it many years ago not very nice but she did survive mainly because our own vet had seen it before and acted very quickly and got us in to Rossdales where she was operated on and survived, she was about 4 or 5 at the time and lived for another 20 years.

Had a friend's pony bleed out and drop dead in my lorry after GPM burst an artery

BUT she admitted she had been ignoring all the warning signs for a while

so i really hope this pony is caught in time

If it's caught in time there's quite a good prognosis. I had an ex-racer who had it - we got him to the vet hospital within 45 mins of the bleed starting and he was operated on very quickly. Made a full recovery.

Tell your friend I'm with her and her pony all the way as my 19 yo went through surgery for GPM late June. (I posted about it in CR some weeks ago).

My boy is still going through the post-op scopes (not an all clear yet) but he's making progress and I'm hopeful that he's going to make it through this.

Incidentally, my vet/surgeon said he had never seen so many of this - normally rare- disease than this year...
A horse at a yard near us bled to death last week. Second one there in 2 years and both horses initially came from the same place. But no one really knows why/how some horses develop the disease and no predisposing factor(s) has been isolated so far.

Keeping everything crossed for your friend. Please keep us updated as I'm more than interested in sharing info on this horrible thing. (You can PM me if you prefer)

The news is.. Bob was operated on this morning. The vet said that it went extremely well. He just has to spend a few days down there recovering and will need drugs afterwards to help his recovery. We are all very happy he has pulled through. He's 17 in Jan so its not like he's a youngster anymore! He's an ex racer so we think its his good old Irish blood that pulled him through. Thanks everyone for your kind words xx
