GWP owners - Galaxy and others - a question?

I personally have only known one GWP and, to be quite honest, the dog's temperament is vile. She is aggressive over toys and food, nasty with other dogs, and has now bitten her owner who intervened in a fight between the GWP and her lurcher over food

I always thought that GWPs could be quite wilfull (in terms of recall for example) but I didnt think they were aggressive - is this correct? I suspect that in the case of the one I know, the owners have let the dog get away with blue murder from day one :(
 
Grew up with them, fantastic dogs but need firm and fair handling from young as can be head strong/will full, like you say recall and if you give an inch they will take a mile. They shouldn't be aggressive but I know there are a couple of lines which have had ill temperament in them.

I'd have another one tomorrow if I could. My mum moved into Wire Vizslas as they're a bit more docile and would rather please you than themselves unlike the Germs. As much as I love my Viz's (I have two at mum's now and also grew up with them) I do sometimes feel them a little irritating in terms of clingyness and wussyness, I prefer the bit of spark and independence you get with a Germ. I have Terriers too so maybe I just have a thing for making life difficult lol :p

Aggressive?

H is a Shorthaired, maybe wired are different but there is not one aggressive bone in H or any other GSP I've mets body.

I've met a full range of temps of total wimps (H!) to very dominant over other dogs. But never nasty. Never heard of any toy or food aggression. My toddler nephew plays with H! (Always supervised obviously)

Unlike the GSPs in the recall thread I've never met one with 0 recall either. Sometimes they have moments ;), but nothing that causes their owners any stress. H got a little tuned out on walks last year so I made done liver cake and he wouldn't go away!!! Lol!

H is my first dog, I have had good people to advise me but I haven't found him 'difficult' in any way. Maybe luck in his temperament (and breeding? He's half show lines) but I know so many others and they are nice well rounded individuals too.
 
Thanks for the replies :) I'm glad my thoughts are right and it is this particular dog which is unusual, I generally like all dogs but I am starting to really dislike this one :( as I said before, I think it is a case of poor handling when the dog was younger :(
 
Lol! I do litter fb with enough photos of him I'd have thought you'd have noticed he doesn't have a goatee!!!! Ha ha!
 
I've got a GSP, not a GWP, and he can be a bit grumpy sometimes.

Only with things like the vet (he wears a muzzle) and he doesn't like it if strangers go straight into his personal space if we are at home; he won't bite but he will grumble at them.
He is fine when we are out and about though and I regularly take him eventing where he passes through 1000's of people without blinking.

Never possessive over food or toys and is very soft and easy to deal with if you're in the family (makes him sound like he is in the mafia!).

Also never ever had a recall issue with him; I was really surprised to read they can be known for that in the other thread as he flies back at Mach 5 if I whistle him!

He definitely has character and can be quite independent and aloof with people he doesn't know but I certainly wouldn't label him as aggressive.
 
It's certainly not a breed "trait" more the odd one you hear about over the years. We were unfortunate enough to have a male who had to be pts at a year/18 months because he started to get aggressive, it started as the odd grump at other dogs, then he was removed from the ring at a show for going for the judge, last straw so to speak when he went for my dad. My brother and I were small so couldn't take the risk.

He's the only one in my 25 years that I've experienced, all the others have been soft as grease.

Certainly wouldn't let it put me/anyone else off of the breed, can happen with any breed
 
I have a gsp- he doesn't have an ounce of aggression in him. Great with other dogs, shares toys, can be cuddled by anyone. Great with kids.

He does have a mind of his own at times where he is independent. If he sees someone new he will bark but its more because he is scared but he wouldn't be aggressive to anyone.
 
H barks at strangers too JoJo. But I like that trait about him, it makes me feel safe when im up the yard alone!! When they actually says hello he's fine and he instantly loves them.
 
We have 2, mum and daughter. Mum absolutely loves all people, not always keen on other dogs in her space but quite manageable. Daughter is more aloof with people but no aggression in her for people or dogs. She can be a bit wussy (we call her scooby doo cos if anyone shouts she jumps on my husbands lap). Neither of them have brill recall, they will come to a whistle but when they are ready!
We kept in touch with all our pups and none have shown aggessive tendencies, in fact we took one back recently and she is a complete softie (rehomed again now) but suffers terrible Separation anxiety (why her original family parted with her after 4 and a half years :-( )
We also have a Korthals Griffon who is a smaller version of them. Her temperament is very different but again no aggression.
Love my girls LOL!
