Hi all,
Apologies, I know this sort of stuff has been said loads in past but I really need some answers, I've been searching the net and forums for a while now for some answers ... right so .. I've got a 2year old COB which I originally brought as a cob cross Wb to make 16.2 but he's Deffo not a cross or even if he is he is built like a tank and won't be making 16.2 . So with this in mind I don't know his parents but he currently stands at 14.2 as a 2 year old gypsy piebald cob gelding .. he's just the most gorgeous boy ever and I've had him since a year old (was 13.2 when I got him) . Many people including vet has said that I will be lucky if he makes 15hh ... I'm just so worried that he's not going to make the height I need , I know that cobs take a while to fill out ect but I'd love him to make at least 15.2 ...am I dreaming guys ??? :-( :-(

Not a cob, but just to give you hope, I bought my gelding as a six year old standing at 15.1hh. By seven, he was standing at 16hh, so there could be quite a bit of growth left in yours yet.
Have you tried string testing him and seeing what that says?

This just can not be reliably guessed. I'd say he could go another hand at least but who knows! He might and he might not. If he doesn't and you really can't bear to ride him or aren't suitable for him at a smaller height then you'll have to send him on.

Thank you , yes I did do the string test but it came out differently when using both methods so I was even more confused lol. I think as I brought him with the intention of making 16.2 from what the sellers told me, for him to not go past 15hh would be hard as I'm so long in the body and fairly tall and always had taller horses ...I'd feel like I'm doing pony club gymkhana games again hehe .

You might be lucky and get 15.2 but I wouldn't think any more. From my experience, native and cob types have tended to reach their height around 3 and then spend the rest of that time just filling out! My 13.2 2 y/o is a 14.2 10 year old now, but probably three times the width he ever was!

Thanks merlod , I felt like I just needed someone to say that he may get to 15.2 :-). Would be amazing if he did but with everyone saying no chance to me in person it's nice to hear that there is a chance he could at the same time. X

Only half Cob but I brought my Appy at 18 months to make 15.2, I think he must have been around 14hh and now as a 3.5 year old he's 15.2 so I'm guessing I'll probably get 16hh at a push when he's stopped growing maybe 16.2 as still lots of growing to do 😊

We bought a rising 4 Sec D to make 15hh... when he finally stopped growing he measured in at 16:1hh. He grew until he was 7, nearly 8.

If he is 14.2 now at two I think he has a way to go, the cobs I've had have all grown continuously up , until about 5/6 and then expanded outwards ( muscle) 6/7 .

Gosh, he sounds lovely, lucky old you !!!

Argh, nooo!

My Sec D measured 14.2 when I bought her at 3 and is now 15.2/3 at 6. I was rather hoping she was done growing by now :p.

The string test is remarkably accurate - measure from the ergot to the elbow, then swing the string up over the wither, keeping the elbow end in place.
