Has anyone seen the full page ad in this week's H&H regarding the huge saddlery stock liquidation sale? Has anyone been to one of these before & are they genuine? It sounds MUCH TO good to be true! Is anyone going - if so could they let us know if they are as good as they sound, as it may well be worth me taking a day off of work to go... I can't imagine what the catch is...

yeah theres one that comes round near us. not bad stuff, ok quality, probably wouldnt buy any tack from them it all looked like foreign imports, when it comes to stuff like that i always prefer to spend a bit for quality.

ah, i must have got a better one than you! lol! i am always doubtful of buying leather form these places unless it's branded with a name i know and even then it can be fake, but i got some good rugs and some other good bargains.

Billie - the ad mentions brand names such as Ariat, Pikeur, Thermatex, Barbour (the list goes on). Do you think that it's mainly unbranded stuff with a few brand bits thrown in for good measure?
Star - was last year's one all brand stuff?

most was branded - some lovely musto jackets etc. lots of tredstep gaiters and soubirac long boots. didn't look awfully closely at the rugs as only bought a summer sheet - unbranded for a tenner which my boy wears all the time and is fine. most of the stuff is from holmestead saddlery and is good stuff.

Hi,

I think there a a few companies doing these mobile sales. I get quite a few of these sales in my area, there are 2 different companies that regularly sell in my area, one company (sory, can't remember any names!) has sales at the East Of England Showground. They charge £2 to get in, which I think is a bit of a cheek, but they have some really good branded products, good prices but a bit pot luck on sizes. The other company used to have sales at a local racecourse, they were v.cheap but mainly import stuff, allegedly Argentinian leatherwork, better than indian leather but not as good as English.

I have bought stuff from both, and have been happy with stuff.

I also heard that this one advertised in the H&H is mainly overstocks etc from Holmstead saddlery, and mostly branded gear. I shall be going to the Newmarket sale, which is the last one. So if anyone goes to an earlier one, I would appreciate some comments.

Regards
Joanna

Somebody mentioned that it's Holmestead stuff - the advert says it's on behalf of the Official Receivers Clearance Co - does this mean that Holmestead have gone into receivership

I don't think all foreign saddlery is bad but sometimes it's Indian leather or something and it is really bad quality and the leather sort of frays and goes all rough. You can smell it a mile off though, it really smells!

I'm still thinking about going on Tuesday (Sevenoaks) - did anyone go last week (or the one in Exeter today)? I'm still keen to know if this specific company is any good. I'm looking for some Ariat boots, any light-weight t/o rugs & a Wintec saddle - I doubt they do saddles though...

well, i did go today. you need to get there dead on opening time if you want a chance of finding the right sizes. i got a velevt saddlecloth for £20, a wool rug for £20 and a toggi shirt for £25. there were loads of toggi jackets 1/2 price which is a good bargain, coz they're brill jackets, but a lot are XL. same with ariat chaps - lots of long. rugs had a good variation of sizes - has some BUCAS ones, but most were brands I hadn't heard of - looked pretty good though. and then lots of other little things. worth a visit i guess, but i wouldn't travel hours to get to one.

Thanks for this Star! I'm particularly looking for a CHEAP 6 foot lightweight turnout rug at the moment, waterprrof & not canvas - my fear is that everyone is going to be looking for the same!!! What happens - does eveyone just flood in & grab stuff? It sounds a bit scary!!!

Why dont you have a look on www.ebay.co.uk
They have some good bargains on there. Alot of the stuff is new and its also very good for selling unwanted items.

Be warned though, its very addictive!!

most of the rugs weren't overly cheap - they were greatly knocked down, but seems they were fairly expensive in the first place - worth a look though. and yes - everyone floods in and dives and grabs - you have to just shove your way in!

Yeah, I'm a 'professional' ebay user - I have purchased several un-needed things that I inevitably end up giving to other people!!! I'm currently looking on there regularly for a Wintec saddle, but they seem to reach quite good prices. I find that if you're not careful, you can end up paying MORE than the retail price - I've seen things sell at overly high prices before now.

Thanks Star - I was really keen to pick up a cheapy rug - about £30 ish, but it sounds like I may be out of luck. My fear is that I'll go & buy loads of stuff that I don't need & still not get my rug (or spend much more on the rug than I had intended). I don't know if these sort of places are a good idea for people with my level of will power when it comes to horsey stuff! It sounds like heaven but it might be a BAD idea! Oh well, anyone got a 2nd hand rug to sell...?!

£40 and you might get something, but then i got mine from the local saddlery at £45 and i could take it back if it was wrong! i bought stuff i didn't really need purely coz it was cheaper and i was getting a bargain! no willpower me! and then managed to get parking ticket (£30) for parking outside marked bays so lost all my saved money - not happy!

We used to have them twice a year, and they were really good, good quality things for a resonable price, but we havent had them around here in the Warwickshire area for a bout 3 years
