Okay, I have seen a couple of different heavyweight rugs, and as this is my first years with our lad, I am unsure what to get. He is m/w TB.
I have seen 300gm HW/350gm HW and 400gm all heavyweights, but 150gm difference in weight? I am confused, (but it does not take much) as to what weight to go for? What H/W do you have?

I have seen the Axiom 300gm, a Rhinegold 350gm, and another one made by Country?, which is 400gm, all on ebay, and from £50-£65, and all have full necks. Your opinions would be gratefully received. :)

i have a premier equine trio 450gm that i layer up with a full neck under rug as well (hunter clipped hunting fit lives out 24/7 365 in all weather on edge of highlands before anyone tells me i shouldn't need to rug that much ;))

As somone who owns over 60 rugs (yeah, I've never ever thrown any out!!) and who has TB experience, I can honestly I would never buy another heavyweight rug again. What I found worked very well with my mare was to layer more liteweight rugs so on a really cold/wet & windy day she would maybe have her wee pj's fleece or an under rug combo duvet rug with a middleweight turnout over that and then a liteweight turnout over the top. I feel it kept her drier with no leaks getting through on really wet days and also very toasty so she held her weight.

I actually ended up selling her heavyweight turnout cause the layering approach worked best for her. Sorry if that confuses things more:)

My old Tb was quite a warm lad so found that a full neck 300g HW did us. When it was v cold through the snow I would layer up and maybe put na 200g MW underneath.. I'm a fan of layering!

Lots of layering seems to be way to go! I have heard good things about the Axiom, so maybe will go with that then, and if it gets uber cold this year can layer up - good idea, thanks! :)

I have a TB who is a bit of a princess so rugging is important. I have 2 heavyweights turnouts for him a 350g and 420g for very snowy times (along with a rainsheet, a 100g and a 200g).

In my experience Horseware rugs are fab for TBs, i have tried others but horseware have impressed me the most. I have used Amigos, rhinos and Rambos, the fit is great for high withered horses and i have never had rubs or leaks from them. (rambos are expensive but ive found some great 2nd hand ones on ebay for much less)

I always use detachable necks so i can regulate the temperature a bit more but some people prefere combos.

It can be confusing looking for rugs but to be honest, there is not much difference between 100g especially when its a heavy weight, it matters more for lighter rugs. go for which ever one fits best and is roomy enough to be comfortable for your horse, you can always layer up with Thermatexes and fleeces if you need to.
good luck

Yeap i agree, layering is gooooood :D On my Tb last year i had a fleece then 350grm rug then a summer sheet ontop to keep rugs clean. He was nice and warm and if he got to warm/cold its easy to take some off or add more.
