Hackamore

Has anybody got experience using them, my friend has bought one for her horse, who is relatively strong . My friend decided she didn't want to hurt her mouth by pulling anymore.

But the only problem is when she put her in the Hackamore this evening the mare was fine initially but then started doing extended trot and canter

(very much like a lipzanner you see in the shows ) it just looked like really strange behaviour, she was stepping really high etc.

I got on her and quietened her down but she still felt like all her movements were exagerated...the owner keeps quizzing me on why i think this has happened and i don't know

...so i thought i would ask a few of you wise owls!!!

I think it is because when she used to run away intiially she used to pull the reins (shes a very tense horse)

But now she can't run through the bit, i think it may be the action the hackamore has on her..??

Is she tucking her head in and exadgerating, or nose out? If she's behind the vertical, it could be a reaction to the pressure, what bit did she have before? Did it excert any pressure on the poll or nose?

She tucks her head in and then sort of ploughs her nose to the ground or tries to, she was in a three ring gag before, used on the bottom hole.

The pressure works on different points with a hackamore, so she could well be evading the pressure.
