Hi, my boy can be very fussy in his mouth so have borrowed a hackamore to see how we get on in that.

When it comes to hackamores I have absolutely no idea so not even sure what kind it is although i have made sure it is fitted correctly.

Could anyone please explain the different types and what action they have, I can then get an idea on what might be the best one to use?

It would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

The two common ones are the English Hackamore and the German Hackamore.

The English has a sort of large cross at the top of the shank and is usually about 3.5 - 4.5 inches in shank, it has a padded leather (or sheepskin lined) nose piece and a leather curb (sometimes with a curb insert)

The German hackamore has longer thinner shanks, normally between 6 - 7 inches. the Nose band is a chain cover with rub and the curb is normally a chain.

Clearly the German hackamore is strong as the longer shanks give more leverage and the chain give a strong curb and nose pressure. Saying that both forms are strong, especially on a light horses (TBs etc)

You need to be careful with fitting to ensure the cheek pieces aren't being pulled forward into the horse's eye and the nose piece isn't too low and putting pressure on the tip of the skull. I usually fit mine but get someone to have a quick check, second opinions (from competent people) are worth their weight in gold!
