Hi all,

Can anyone recomend me somewhere to go for a 2hr/half day hack anywhere up to 2hrs from bristol?

Background is I had a 2year break from riding and started again in june, thankfully I do seem to remember what button does what so I'm comfortable in walk/trot/canter and not adverse to the odd log, been riding for 10 years prior. The OH started riding as a complete beginner at beginning of July. He's confident in walk and trot and has just started to have little canters. We'd like to get out and about and for him to have a bit of fun as he's only had lessons so far. He still needs something safe and sensible plus he's a stocky 6ft 2 and I'm fat.

Little or no roadwork is preferable just as the OH can be a little nervous still (admittedly he's only on about lesson 8!)

Oh and it needs to be open on a monday as I have the 19th off!

Thank yee muchly, tea and biscuits for all, I gota go back to work but I will be back later!

Have no personal experience of either, but I see both Shipham Riding and Tynings Trekking Centre out on rides near me all the time. They seem to both have lots of stocky types, and have some really lovely off-road riding up on Rowberrow Warren / Black Down. Shipham Riding have a couple of miles of roadwork till you get to bridleways, but Tynings have direct off-road access.

Hope that helps!

If you'll go a bit futher into Wales, there's this place:

I've not ridden there myself, but from what I've seen the horses look in good nick and they've definitely got some heavies. No road work, they cross a river out the yard and are straight down into the sand dunes to get to the beach, beautiful scenery too. At weekends sometimes there are a lot of people on the treks at once, but I reckon you'd be fine on a week day. I think they will take you both on one trek and split off so you can have a canter while your OH carries on walking :) Lovely pub (The Pelican) just next door if you want food after too, yum :D

I would add Longhorn Western Riding into the mix. They do great hacks in and around the woods of Longleat estate and were really good when I took my dad who hadn't ridden for 20yrs previous!! Great fun and they do 'English' as well as Western... nothing like hearing the lions roar as you ride through the woods!! There website is www.longhornwesternriding.co.uk :)

Haven't been to Tynings for years and years but nice setting.

Def give Mendip Stud a call. went there a couple of years ago and was impressed. Not sure what their hacking is like though.

Urchinwood Manor might be worth a shot. Son had lessons there and they have nice outriding.

I've been on some lovely hack at Barton End when I was younger when friends had birthday parties there.

Very little, if any roadwork from what I can remember, Shame they're shut on Mondays! :(

Further away but there's Tumpy Green near Dursley.

I would agree with the suggestion of Tynings, been to both Shipham and Tynings and when we go back it will be to Tynings. Nothing wrong with Shipham but got a better feel for Tynings.
