I'm going to hire a box next weekend and take my horse out somewhere around Preston/Chorley/Blackburn area. I keep my horse near Chorley and it's our first time out so I'd like to stay reasonably local. I don't want to go for miles and miles as she is young and can be nappy, just a nice leasurely hack somewhere off road... to be honest I'd be happy if I just found a big field to ride in as there is no off road hacking close to my yard! Any ideas welcome. I know there's Cuerdon Valley, but I'm not sure exactly where the bridleways are or how to access them.

Hoghton Bottoms is also relatively close and I seem to think there's a bridleway running down to the River Darwen, which would be great if she could go and have a paddle in the very shallow sections. But again I have no idea where the bridleway is or how to get to it.

Looking forward to some replies! :)

Thanks, Roddlesworth woods sounds good, please can you give me a road name or postcode so I know where to park?

Beacon fell is a bit far for our first time, not sure how she'll be loading so need to stay reasonably close to the yard in case I need to call on someone to come help! Rivington sounds good too although again I'm not too sure where to park or where is best for riding (no gates, stokes etc). I need to get to know all the good places!

Thanks again :)

Also, does anybody know if it's possible to ride anywhere on Witton Park in Blackburn? I know there's a horse show there regularly so presume it's ok to park up there and ride through the park?

If you want to go to Roddleworths wood you can park easily either on the area near the bus turn round or the cafe car park at the rear of the pub car park. If you google The Royal arms Tockholes that will give you a post code. The road is called Tockholes road. Plenty of paths in the woods with no gates. If you go to Rivington there are gates to go through if you you go up to the Pike no gates on the lower paths but are shorter rides. At Rivington plenty of parking there is a dirt track to the side drive of the Top Barn next to the house, horse boxes usually park there. There is only the area where the show is held through Pleasington gates to ride on the grass at Witton park the other area are used for football and cricket so they can get upset about horses going on those bits. You used to be able to ride right through the park on the road and come out at Pleasington village but I've not done that in years so not sure if it's still possible. Hope this helps. :).

Hi Annie B, kept meaning to reply to say thank you very much, that is really helpful! I'll definitely get over to roddlesworth woods very soon, it's not too far from me which is great. Thanks for your help! Just need to start getting out and about with my neddie and finding out where all the good hacking spots are! Thanks again.
