Just back from holiday in the Orne region of Normandy - and what amazing horses they have in France. OH & I are seriously going to move there when we retire. But a question, where do you ride in France? I couldn't work out what was private and where access was allowed. How do you know?

Any other useful information about keeping horses in France would be really helpful, thanks.

Glad you liked France! Overall the hacking is much much better over here, but of course it does depend on the area.

You ride on 'routes randonnes' which are kind of like bridleways (but open to other off road users and with no particular priority for horses). You can find local ones to where you are visiting using this map (like a UK OS map): http://www.geoportail.fr/visu2D.do?ter=metropole They are marked as continuous, thin, black lines.

Total France is a good forum for all things french adn has a horsey section. Here is the sticky for the main equestrian websites: http://www.totalfrance.com/france/forum/viewtopic.php?t=81960

Thanks Booboos, that is so helpful, answers a lot of questions. While we were in the Orne we went to the National Stud at Haras du Pins - what wonderful horses and what a show they put on. Such spirit from horses and riders.

Time to brush up on my French lessons!
