Tried Shearer out on his own again this afternoon, attempted the cunning plan as by recommendation from Orange_Empire and I am pleased to say it worked, we managed to get the whole way round the block on our own with only one spook at a scary yellow grit box.
Found that the trick was to just school him the entire way round, so we were doing leg yielding and shoulder in the whole way down the drive and the practicing stepping off my leg on each rein the whole way round.

I found with my huge orange young (well sort of! 7) horse who is not great with traffic (we have to go out onto an A road with big silver reflective milk tankers etc!) is to relax and give him more reign...sounds odd as you would like to have more contact in case he shoot out into the road but he is way more relaxed that way
