Hi all, I need to hack my boy to new yard next weekend so thought I'd do a little road hacking today, haven't done any road work since christmas, normally fine on roads, great with cars, buses the lot. Today went out on roads and complete nightmare. He didn't bat an eyelid at cars or lorries but kept spooking at drains, on the way back after 10 minutes he suddenly took off, cantered into the middle of the road, thank god nothing was coming. All because of a drain. Worried now to take him out on roads, but need to hack him to new yard, 40 mins away next week. We had company, although he was in front, don't know what to try, Should I try again with him behind a sensible horse or just leave until we have to hack to new yard. Friend thought it could be spring grass, he has never been spooky at drains before.

its not too busy, road work all the way, but we've done it a 100 times before, he knows the area well, don't know why he is scared of drains all of a sudden. Don't really want him to stop road work altogether, he used to be so good on the roads.

They are wierd with their sudden dsilikes aren't they?! Take him out in hand several times before you go, so he knows they are not going to kill him. Walk onto them yourself (my boy sometimes makes me prove that things aren't lethal by touching them with my foot, kicking them etc!). Let him have a good look and take his time, preferably not in rush hour!

My horse does this, she hasn't been hacked out for just two weeks (I know not very long) she will be all spooky and snake up the road and will be eyes on stalks type of thing. When she is hacking more regularly she does get better, so I would suggest get him out and about as much as possible pre the trip to the new yard, so it's no big deal.

Goodluck... Also, if you are moving and he gets a bit iffy, get off and lead him if that helps!

Would someone be prepared to be a foot soldier for you. Failing that if you feel safer getting off then do and lead the horse to new yard!
