My horse is sometimes nappy although he has really improved as I've been schooling him whilst hacking. Today when hacking on the local bridleway, we had to pass a couple of overturned oil barrels and some rubbish (piles of rubbish are the only things he really seems to dislike), on the way out I let the pony we were with go in between us and the 'scary' rubbish but on the way home I pushed him on and refused to let him stop and nap, we ended up going from walk to galloping until we were about six strides past the barrels which unseated me slightly.
My question is did I do the right thing or should I have let the other pony lead the way or go between him and the scary object as he was genuinely scared?
Do you think this will have damaged his confidence?
When I first got him he would do this really fast trot if I made him go past something he was unsure of, which he doesn't do any more as I make him work in an outline so he's concentrating on my rather than what he is scared of, well until todays incident
and I'm concerned that this may have undone our hard work.
