We seem to be getting millions of wind turbines up here in Aberdeenshire (honestly, its a joke - I absolutely hate them!). As a result the house we're moving to next week is near a large one (about 15/20 huge turbines). They're over a large area of moor-type land with tracks everywhere so Im wondering - is it perfectly safe to hack round these?? Obviously Id have to get my horses used to them but after a cow was killed by one of these exact turbines last year (apparently it was found electrocuted after standing on some underground cables which ran through one of the fields next to the turbines (I wouldn't be going near this particular field and no cables run anywhere near my field!)) - Im still rather paranoid!

You’ll be fine, my neighbour has a turbine less than 150m from my house and the field I keep my horse in. Never been an issue.

You might hate them, but hey, no coal smog and it’s not a nuclear plant. There are lots of ways of generating electricity, none perfect, none without consequences, some worse than others. Enjoy your hacking :)

We regularly ride past a batch of about 16 turnbines. I was more worried than my horse when we first went past - he just ignored them and he'd never seen any before. As riders, we tend to worry more about them than the horses.

Horses don't give toss about them, it's the humans who have hang ups (including me first time I rode my mare past a farm of them).

Think positive...all the hacking that is going to be available (You couldn't hack through a coal mine, gas works or nueculer Power station)

Ive only been up right close once, we rode through a wind farm, and the horses took no notice. Mine had never seen one bfore, I dont know about the other riders horses, but it was a complete non-event.

My wimpy spooky TB wasnt bothered by the one wind turbine he went near - which I was very suprised by.

It was in the vicinty of a local HT course, which he had been too before. You went over a hill, and suddenly you could see it! I did wonder how he would react (as having been to the location before he would have know what was there), and he completely ignored it. Most suprised!

I've only hacked my boy near one and he didn't even register it.

My local Trec group actually had a wind farm familiarisation ride recently around a nearby windfarm - I'm sure they wouldn't be doing that if it wasn't safe so I'm sure you'll be fine.

only ever seen one - on a fun ride - we had to ride almost directly under it and none of the horses were bothered at all !! weird ! no spooking or anything.
