I’ve recently moved to a stables in Virginia water near Thorpe green. I was wondering if anyone knows of any hacking or bridlepaths near there or within 30 minutes to get to? Would prefer forest routes etc as my horse isn’t great with open fields, but I’m open to hearing any suggestions!
Please let me know thanks :)

Highly recommend the OS Maps app. It's even better if you have a smart watch with maps function, as you can quickly check turns on the watch face for routes you've plotted. If you have transport, the SUrrey Hills website has some routes plotted within trailering distance for you.

If you’re hacking from the yard there isn’t much I’m afraid. I think there is a permissive route across the green still which is on grass but that’s very short. Once over the green there is a bridlepath going from Hurst lane to Stroude Road and if you cross over the road there is another one down Hollow lane that ends up on Callow Hill, both of those are hard surfaces though (or at least were when I was stabled on the Lyne / VW border many years ago!). There’s one other one that cuts off the corner between stroude rd & Sandhills lane but again surfaced & very short straight through a very posh housing estate.

There is also permissive routes around Chertsey meads but it’s not nice roads to ride on to get there.

If you’ve got transport then Chobham common would be your best bet.

Boxing to Chobham common or Horsell common are your best bets. Traffic around there although it ought to be horse aware isn't good and in the past 25 years I've known 2 horse fatalities a couple of other accidents and numerous near misses. Daughter used to hack to Chertsey meads and Chobham common 30 years ago. She stopped riding on roads 15 years ago as not worth the risk.

There isn't anywhere to park a box or trailer at Horsell common, never really has been. Both car parks have low height barriers, the Wetlands isn't suitable at all.

For Chobham there is a small track by the 4 horse shoes pub, they request no parking in pub hours though, plus 1 small horsebox space just over the M3 at the Queen Victoria's Mount car park.
Otherwise all anyone can do is plead for yard owners to offer a parking space, or take someone who can drop you off and wait elsewhere while you ride.
