Gosh, this takes me back to my youth! In the 60's and 70's I hacked everywhere to shows, hunting, PC rallies, whatever.
In those days it was so much easier as the traffic was not nearly as bad.
In today's climate, I would certainly make sure that the route was quiet roads or bridle ways. Not sure of timings, but a human walks a mile in about 10-15 minutes I think.

i think the furthest i have done is about 4 miles and that takes a good hour or so depending on how much trotting you do but obvs dont want to be tired before you start..

not sure of distance as my route takes me through woods and paths. But i hack to the local riding club. Takes about 15-20 minutes walking all the way.

Another of the "back in the day". I would regularly hack 5 miles to a pony club rally (do the rally) and then home again. Three days on the trot for camp! I used to allow an hour for 5 miles.

In my youth (ha ha long time ago ;)) we'd think nothing of hacking 8 miles there, 8 miles back for a show, hunting, PC rally or what-have-you - and that was on main roads some of it. We were a hardy bunch and just did it as our parents weren't horsey and no-one had any transport then - not like today's cossetted kids (dare I say it).

I reckon that my fairly ploddy cob can do 4 miles an hour very easily; that's a good forward walk and a bit of trot. So I think if you allowed an hour for your 3 miles which would give you a bit of time to chill when you get there, that would be more than enough time.

I hack mine to shows - as long as they are fittened and conditioned there is absolutely no reason why they cannot do it. We do up to about 8 miles plus a class or two then back. I found the organisers very helpful and accomodating about dressage test times too if you explain. Check out your routes, if you have a quieter way that puts a bit of distance on it is quite often better than shortest way on busier roads.
Tack-wise - just go in your show finery and add a Sam Browne hi-viz on yourself and some hi-viz legwraps on the horse - they will roll up in your pocket if you can't leave them in the Secretary's office whilst you do your classes, though mostly I've found that people are very kind in looking after things for a short time.
I personally just do the classes and then come home if I am completely on my own (at least you can always get in and out of muddy gateways with 4-hoof drive;))

I regularly hack the 3 miles to the local cross country course and club field for our riding club and any other comps which takes about 40 mins. Did it on Sunday for a show cross comp, friend took a few bits up in her car as doing XC but if just go up for SJ have my hi viz on and bumbag with money etc and leave with secretary, never met anyone who minded looking after a few bits for short time. Great warm up and hack back is great cool down. Horse came 2nd so doesnt affect performance if they are fit enough.

I hacked 10 miles to a local SJ comp. Did 2 rounds and hacked back. Pony was plenty fit enough and it took 2 hours bang on. Horse got home - wasn't sweaty/hot and still full of beans.

I made sure she had an hour either way to rest before tackling the journey home.

I have a dressage center about 4 miles down a bridleway from me and I intend to enter my lad into a class or two next month and hack there and back. He's fairly fit anyway but I'm doing a dummy run once a week from now till the comp date just to be sure he'll be ok. Last attempt took 40 mins at a good forward walk. Not sure I'll want to do it in the height of Summer as I'll most likely get hot and bothered but I doubt it'd bother George too much as long as there is a nice drink of water and a haynet at both ends!
