Watched some Hackneys at Hickstead yesterday and wondered what the judges look for, I've got friends who drive Welshies but Hackneys are a bit out of my ken. There were only four in the class, they were driving small buggy type vehicles looked a bit American, I always assumed that these horses were known for their amazing trot and action so surely if one horse breaks into canter that should mark it down but no it got second and there was outside assistance too bit like some arab classes. Drivers please help me understand.

They can be pretty stressy and make a break into canter, but if they show a good high step (in front AND (ideally) behind) they'll be judged on that.
