What do ppl think of Hackney's or specifically a 3/4 hackney 1/4 cob for dressage? Would the high stepping action be advantageous or a hinderance? Sorry if I sound dumb but was thinking of looking at one for sale and don't know too much about the breed.

I love that combination ... Oh oh oh oh I am so EXCITED ..... see my boy in the pic ..... he is Welsh D x Hackney ... Daddy Hackney and he is the bestest thing ever ....

Pip is 1/4 hackney, 1/4 TB, 1/2 welsh and does well at low level dressage.

I think the most important thing to check out is if the horse is willing to strech down as this is not natural for hackneys but cruicial for dressage. You will find if you get it to relax down the high knee action will almost dissapear!
 
Pip the future world champion! Can't get a better recomendation.

I've heard a few hackneys do ok at low levels, its been said you just have to get their heads down which can be a bit of a mission with some!
 
Agree that you have to make sure horsey can stretch down - if it's a youngster then that my not be an issue.

I have to say, that if I'm ever in a position to keep a few horses, a hackney is right up there for me!

Guess you can say that of any breed - Ty couldn't canter in a circle when I got him!
 
chestnut in my sig is a hackney x welsh c- he's amazing for hunting- goes through the mud like a tractor with his high steppingness.

he works well once he's warmed up and the knee action only really becomes apparant if he's either allowed to run on or gets excited-i.e hunting.

love my hackneys, I have just sold my 148 hackney gelding to a show jumping home where he is doing exceptionally well and bought myself a hackney stallion. They are very naturally athletic little horses, who are also very bright and easy to train. I never bothgered with dressage with my last lad though, as he got very hyped up at shows and would never have done a decent test, this one I'm also planning to show jump but fingers crossed he may go on to event.
 
I thought I was a sworn Connemara fan but now I've heard all ur opinions (and seen some gorgeous members hackneys) I'm completely sold on them. Hmm wonder what a connie x hackney would be like!
