I had my second lesson with Spencer on Hannah... I went in telling him how she has been incredibly argumentative since I came home and that she seemed really unsettled in her mouth. But, having changed the bit the night before, I had felt an improvement and the arguments had decreased.
We warmed up long and low (which she now does... thanks to our last lesson) and she was working really well. Spencer said he could see a good improvement in her way of going since the last lesson and her topline muscle was trembling it was that soft
So, evil Hannah had not yet reared her ugly head (I am sure my horse is a Gemini!!!)
I explained that when she knows how to do something, she then uses it against you. For example when you are trying to straighten her a bit on the long side if she is stressing, she then travers and just goes into half pass on all her own
He asked us to do some canter work and noticed that when I tried to get her right shoulder under her more, she would collect so much that she was just bouncing on the spot... he said she obviously uses the fact she can collect so easily to avoid moving the shoulder over!
He had us working mostly in canter at collection, then medium, then collection, then medium so at no point was she in control... he wants me to work on this more now because he said the degree of change will just keep increasing the stronger she gets and the more she understands.
So all in all, it was a really good lesson and I came away feeling much more positive about my little carthorse!
