Puzzle turned a year old yesterday. Was meant to be going out for dinner tonight, picked up non-horsey friend and popped in to check on horses before going out for dinner. At which point, non-horsey friend yells "oh my GOD! what is THAT on her eye?". Cue me running towards the youngster, noticing a huge swelling round her whole eye.

Rang the vet, who came out 2 and a half hours later (which is fine, it wasnt an emergency). He thinks she either got something in her eye and she rubbed too hard or kicked herself in the head trying to get rid of it. Don't think its an infection.

Two injections, one anti inflam, and one anti bio just to be sure its not an infection. 4 days of bute.

But on the plus side, she didnt bat an eyelid at the needles, the vet was an absolute angel and he said how lovely she was and how wonderfully behaved she was! So, proud mummy moment.

Aged about 10years in 5mins though!!!

Ye thats what he said, that she might have got bitten on the inside of the eye or got a grass seed in it. Bloody animals!!

It'll be lots - it always is! The real decider for me (to either have a heart attack on the spot and call the vet straight out or feel pretty relaxed - but call the vet out anyway!) is if the horse is trying to keep it open or avoid opening it. At all costs.

My horse has come in with frog eyes but is always trying to open them as best he can with all the swelling. We think it's a pollen thing. Always goes away quite quickly but VERY alarming to come across for the first time!
