Had horse backed at 4 with intention of carrying on but rider injury resulted in having the horse turned away for a year. Would now like to continue but have been told that a year off was too long and will need backing again as he is likely to get very excited. I am not a novice rider but it was a serious accident so slightly dubious, so was wondering if anyone else has had a horse backed then turned away for whole year, any advice very much appreciated.

The horse will probably need restarting, this should take less time than the first backing but if done quietly should go well and the horse can be ridden away fairly quickly, if you are at all worried get some professional help rather than risk having a fall or upsetting a horse that is at the start of it's ridden career. There is no reason the horse should get over excited but some high spirits may be expected.

Depends on how long was under saddle previously, how they took to being back and general temperament of horse.

It won't hurt to treat the horse like they are being re-backed, working up slowly under saddle.

We just restarted one that was backed and ridden away at four and had 9 months off to mature, we restarted her like we would a breaker but she progressed quickly with her ridden work and did her first lesson away from home after 5 weeks and her first dressage test after 6.

I also would assume the horse will need restarting then you just progress quicker if the horse is happy and calm with the work .the horse will let you know what's right for it.
