Just had my NFU insurance renewal through and I was just wondering how it compares to everyone elses.

The price is £440 - It iis for a 10 year old 16h gelding with no past claims or conditions who is kept 5 miles from home - we hack and hunt (dont compete) - the insurance includes:-

Vet fees up to £5000 with £125 excess (excess cant be raised I asked) includes MRI if required and up to 10% complimentary therapy.
Public Liability
Loss of Horse (£800 - this is standard and cant be removed)
Trailer cover for equitrek space trekka worth up to £4000
Also includes cover whilst hunting

I dont think it seems too bad and when phoning around last time couldnt get a better price as the hunting pushed it through the roof with some (understandably).

Beer, wine, mini scotch eggs, crisps and dips for any responses....

More than reasonsable for the level of cover i would say!

NFU are one of the best companies to deal with, we used them for 8 years until we sadly lost ours. They paid out and dealt with the vets direct so saved us the hassle, also really nice to speak to should you ever have to.

I'd echo what blackvelvet said, I had a quote of around the same price for my 5yr old Arab, and have just had a claim approved for a nasty cut on his leg. Paid the vets direct, and they are also covering additional hay and bedding whilst on box rest. Couldn't be more impressed.

Thanks guys (the food/drink offering obv. worked) I would rather stay with NFU as they have always been good so will stick with them (not even ringing round for other quotes) - as they include hunting as standard their cover always seems reasonable.

im with petplan atm and i pay £20 a month for vet's fees/liability etc (dont know about MRI scan though and that was a very valid point a few threads ago...)

NFU were brilliant with my last horse and i went with pet plan as i thought NFU are pricing themselves out of the market!

i will consider them for next year i think given that quote OP :)

Sounds fair.

I pay £800 per year for:
1 16 year old PBA
1 11 year old arab
1 bateson trailer

Hacking and endurance (which probably carries the same level of risk as hunting)

same levels of cover as your quote.

I had one claim for a colic 2 years ago on my PBA and they paid out very quickly with no quibbling.

yes but its 2 and field kept haha :)

i think its actually £22 now and it is ok tbh - they are a really good insurance company and only had one little rant at them which they solved quickly :)

Blimey, there seems to be a big difference in quotes, double checked mine and it was actually 480, 75 was for trailer and 75 personal liability!

I pay NFU a £1020 a year for a 12 year old warmblood who does a bit of dressage and riding club stuff. He is kept at livery about 9 miles from home. No trailer cover included, that's done separately with another company. He had had 1 claim for treatment with the osteopath when this renewal came through. I dread to think what the next renewal will be as he has since had a colic surgery claim.

I have had two accident-prone horses insured with NFU, I have an ongoing claim at the moment and NFU have always been excellent in every way - I would not even compare premiums now because I would not insure with any other company unless I had to. Worth every penny for peace of mind alone!

You'll get personal liability a bit cheaper through BHS Gold membership - think it's £65 a year?:)

I think I need to adjust my cover... My insurance with NFU has gone up in 4 years from 300 to 600 a year - for a 13 yo connie x kept at livery for whom I have NEVER made a claim! I was thinking of changing companies this time as Petplan came in at £33 a month.

I've been with NFU for years, but about to look elsewhere. They took so long to pay a claim two years ago that the transport company threatened to sue me - I did get a hamper and £100 compensation. They then put the horse's premium up to over £700 per year - A TB mare worth £500. I cancelled it, and discovered recently that they had carried on taking her premium out along with my other 6 (which is why I hadn't noticed). They have just paid me back over £1000, but it's one mistake too many.

friend pays only £18 per month with E&L for vets fees so thought I would have a look. Very important to read the blurb at the bottom of the screen .... the excess on fees is 17.5% which to me kind of defeats the purpose of having vets fees insured as if I were to claim up to the £5000 limit on their intermediate option I would have to pay £875 in excess !!!!!!!

Also be careful if you go for intermediate value rather than intermediate there is a £2k limit on vets fees !! again for me defeats the purpose of insurance as I could probably find the money for the smaller things but not for the dreaded colic surgery or other horspital type things which are bound to go over £2k.

public Liability is also only 1.25 million wheras NFU s 2.5 million !

rant over !

NFU quote just came in and has increased by 45% to GBP77 a month. Been with them for 10 years. I can drop my horses value from GBP5k but NFU claiming that the increase is due to the increase in vets fees not his value. I have never claimed and the guy claimed on the phone that all policies have gone up like this.

I work in another type of insurance and have to say that is a pretty poor excuse.

My NFU is £46 per month for a 10YO horse 5 miles from home and a £2.4K trailer.
Have had the policy for 6 years and have never made a claim.
Policy fees seem to vary dramatically

Just insured mine via Amtrust equine 14 year old Haffie for cover including death & theft 5K vets fees & hospitalisation etc. £245.25. I have a £250 excess and didn't need tack cover or PLI and Bateson Ascot trailer worth £2700 for £87.85

I insured mine yesterday. £239 pa , £5000 vet fees livery at vets 50% £125 excess. RURAL INSURANCE through the H&H site.http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/insurance

I pay £36 pcm with NFU for a 10yr old show cob vets fees/loss of horse (haven't made a claim) and my trailer value £1500. Just wondering if postcodes come into play like house and car insurance. I know it wouldn't be crime related but may have something to do with general insurance statistics?????

I have just renewed with NFU.

I have 2 horses insured and a trailer. Don't have PL as that is covered with BHS membership.

I'm paying £856 in total. It has gone up a little this year as I claimed last year.

Horse 1 - LOU 17 yr old. He has no endorsements and the NFU have paid a claim of almost £5000 for low grade lameness. No problems with the claim and his premium has gone up about £100 for the year.

Horse 2 - more valuable sj pony - 9 yr old.

Trailer is down at £54.

I just use BHS for the oldies in the field. But NFU did pay out PTS costs, disposal and £500 to me when my 34 yr old horse needed PTS. Mind you, he had been insured for 30 years and that was my first claim on him. NFU went up a lot for me 2 years ago which is when I took the oldies off.

I pay £39 per month for a yearling with NFU - took out policy 7 months ago. All quotes I got were comparable, but was impressed with NFU. Am about to put a claim in so will see what happens..

PetPlan were approx £1 per month cheaper, but then they annoyed me and were also insisting on a formal vetting (for a weanling!) and the cover wasn't as good.

A friend has had terrible problems with another (cheap & not equine specific) insurer, and my vet has a sign up saying they won't deal with them due to frequent non payment..

I have also moved away from NFU after they quoted a staggering £900 for a 10y/o IDxTB for RC and hunting - no trailer or personal liability either! The reason was because I made a claim on a previous horse I had insured through them. New horse had passed 5 stage vetting. Moved to Amtrust who quoted a much lower figure. I must admit I was rather disappointed as I liked dealing with NFU.

I am delighted with NFU and always have been. I pay £70 a month for the standard stuff for a 3 year old and a 10 year old, both big horses kept at home.
Main plus has always been no quibble pay outs, my vets are happy to deal with them, and my youngsters insurance hasn't gone up this year in spite of a £3500 op claim, although his hind leg is now excluded, fair enough.
