Gutted is an understatement, We started off with just clipping him because he was literally dripping in sweat with out a rug on.

Whilst clipping we discovered he had mites...although i have been treating him for this. Clearly they were still there so we did a full body and left the legs.

Whilst checking him around he my friend noticed he had mud fever, and lice in his feathers so extremely reluctantly i have said take them off.. and a touch of sweet itch...so the (pathetic little mane ive been fighting to keep growing with tiny little plats) came off also

He is alot happier in him self now, thats for sure! he seems to appreciate the working hunter clip! How ever i dont :( i already miss my scruffly little cob

How can i help the re-growth of his mane, and feathers... and then prevent this happening again? How do i stop mites getting in to his feathers
And is there any supplements that could help his hair grow stronger as before it would just fall out?

There is a jab you can get for mites ! I read sweetitch can be cauesd by sugar intolerance so only feed fiber

It is very warm at the moment both mine are very sweaty - I can't get someone to clip my mare for love nor money !!

Ask your vet re the injection i think its called detromax (or something like that) Hovis has it several times a year.

Pig oil and sulphur is available from several online retailers already mixed. Just google it.

Good luck xx

We use Matthew Burks to get pig oil and sulphur from. (The pig oil is good for stopping wet and mud getting on legs, and the sulphur helps to make the skin hostile to mites).

Does he have sweet itch or could it have been lice?

Megatek is supposed to be very good at helping manes and tails grow, although its not something I've ever used on my horses.

didnt know you could get an injection! Ive also heard there is a spot on treatment for them aswell. How good this is i dont know!

Where do i get pig oil from?

The injection is dectomax - didn't work for me. The spot on treatment could be 'flypor'. This is a cattle treatment not licensed for horses. I use it on mine but watch it around the eyes. Its only from vets but I just made up a cattle herd number and got mine from an online company.

Pig oil and sulphur from ebay/google.

PS Don't beat yourself up. I was horrified by the arrival of lice 2 years ago but with the type of climate we are having its pretty endemic. Cleared all mine and then my broody came back from stud crawling.

This might sound very stupid and it's not Scientitic
But when I had my little colour cob he came to us very itchy, no mites just an itchy horse so because of this his old owner had pulled his mane very short (I like long manes) so I was told by a friend who is training to be a farrier to try feeding him marmite, I know it sounds crazy but my little cob loved it and with in 6 month his mane had shot down past his neck and he wasn't half as itchy, it might be worth trying it with your little lad, it takes a wile to get in there system and to see the results but you can't pumping them full of chemicals and if they like it your on to a winner, it got to the point were my cob would lick it out of the jar!!!
Wish you all the best with your little colt :)

Have him injected for the mites.

Bath him in Nizoral for the mud fever - it will clear it up fast, dilute in hand hot water and lather up well, wash him all over as he is clipped, leave 10 mins and scrape off excess.

For prevention feed a supplement with a higher proportion of zinc and copper.

Hair growth can be speeded up by rubbing in cornucrescene into the mane.

Take him off all the feeds with molasses in them and replace with traditional feeds, oats/barley/meadow chaff.
