Its cost £400 for his body to be collected and removed and they wanted an extra £200 to remove the shoes ( we then removed them). This is excluding the vets bill. As I have never had to put a horse/pony PTS I have no idea of how much it should cost.

That it twice what it cost us at Easter for the slaughterer to come, shoot the mare (17hh ShirexClyde) and remove and dispose of the body. She was unshod but that has never made any difference to the cost in the past. I think they are way over the top. Where are you based, roughly?

I hope there is never a next time, there is a knackerman in Haywards Heath (Turners they are in Yellow Pages) £75.00 to dispatch and remove he is a great tall man, but very very compasionate, when he came for one of mine, he had just had to put down his four year old mare the day before whom had broken her leg, and was crying his eyes out over it. He is so quiet and calm and plays with the horses first and talks to them, he puts them totally at ease and deals with hysterical owners too with empathy.

Even one of our liveries in Reigate was £650 for individiual cremation including vets fees, (Gaytons) returned in a lovely oak casket to the owner, I think your charges were very very steep.

So so sorry for your loss tonight, it sure aint easy.

Firtstly, I'm sorry for your loss.

I've not been in this position myself but I have recently been making arrangements in case I am. Local kennels will do the deed and take away for £100 (25 mile journey - don't know if that makes a difference) or if I take him there (he loved hunting so won't be frightened by the hounds) there would be no charge.

My friends have recently had this with one of their (uninsured) horses. Was diagnosed as terminal after expensive scans and they were advised not to take it home but have it pts at the vets - total bill for pts and removal was going to be £700 on top of what they had paid for the diagnosis. They said thank you but no thank you, loaded him on the lorry and took him to the hunt.

What I can't believe is the £200 for taking the shoes off!

I would pay anything to have mine PTS in the most quiet way and i got to admit that the hunt/knackerman is the last place where i would take any of my horses.....I paid £634 for disposal, individual cremation, casket and polished shoes and it was worth every penny. The only person that i will allow to end my horse's life is my vet who knows them and me.
I am so sorry for your loss and i do share your pain and sadness.

I think £200 for removal of shoes is taking total advantage of a tragic situation! It's not as if their other rates are reasonable compared to the experiences of other posters.

I'm really sorry you've been put through this! You must be devastated.

The knackerman comes out and PTS at home and then removes the body. I have had two PTS by our local knackerman (a lovely bloke who I know through the vets I used to work for) and two PTS by injection by the vet and then the knackerman has taken them away. It's all a matter of personal preference and what is best for you and your horse.
BTW I have never heard of paying extra for removing the shoes, unless you wanted them back maybe?
So sorry for your loss - a very sad time for you.

Thank you for your replies. It was my sons girlfriend's pony, she doesn't keep her pony at my yard so I had I just popped up to see how things were going (didn't realise that things got that bad) and the vet was lovely and it was very peacful at the end. The vet then contacted whoever for body to be removed. I stupidly didn't have my phone on me as I thought it was going to be a flying visit. So the vet left and and the others stayed with my son and his girlfriend. When they came home late last night thats when they told me how much it was.

I doubt they charged £200 to remove the shoes. It sounds like they have been charged for individual cremation as this is very expensive £600 sounds about right for individual cremation - did they ask for the ashes back?

When my kids pony died I rang the hunt's houndsmans (is that a word?) wife, as my kids are at school with them.

She gave me her husbands mobile number as he was out collecting some cattle.

He came up and removed Chantelle for us. Didn't even want anything for it as she was going to feed the hounds.

I still took some money down to school the following day though.

I will need the hunts services again fairly soon, as I don't think my old lad will be put through another winter. Not too sure how things will be done yet, as I guess it will depend on when and how things go.

Ah sounds like it was a long illness then. If the horse as drugs in their system and put down through injection that sort of price doesnt surprise me. Mind you £200 for shoes is just taking the mick.

Very sorry for the loss and thought are with her.

I think exactly the same as you i dont think i could ever send mine to the hunt/knackerman but i suppose everyone is different and some horses are only machines to some people so its not something they think about.

Sorry for your loss i know my friend payed about £200 for hunt kennel to take away there dead horse.

I think what always turned my stomache was once going to the local hunt kennels and going near there shed and just smelling dead animals then my friend saying she had seen a few dead horses in a skip i cant think of anything less dignified for anything someone loved.

I paid £ 600 odd each for collection and private cremation.

The vet's charged £ 130 ish, one was by injection and the other by bullet.

Sorry for your loss.

The rendering company that I use charges me 120 euro for collection-full stop. They do ask to have the shoes removed before collection but thats okay by me. I would be reporting your collectors to the 'Fare Trade whatsit people?, what they asked you is way over the top. Bloody hell-no blacksmith asks that much for putting them on!

So sorry about your loss. I had to have my lovely 6 yr old mare pts nearly 3 months ago and it cost £400, that included my vet injecting her at the hospital, collection and individual cremation with the ashes returned in a cardboard box, no shoes back with that. Couldn't bear to think of it being done in any other way, was as dignified and as peaceful as those things can be and meant I could be with her. I am in south of England for comparison costs.

Yes we are all very different and since I don't agree with Fox Hunting i could not send one of my horses to the hunt kennels,it turns my stomach just thinking about it !
No,all my horses will be PTS by an injection and then returned back to me so that i know where they are, but that is my choice and i don't/wont judge anyone that makes other decisions with their horses/ponies
