so last week i went down to the yard to sort my boys out. i turned them both out in the field and out of luck i stayed and watched as my old boy got down and rolled. only thing is he couldnt get back up. he started panicking so i knelt on his neck to calm him and stop him from attempting to get up while i rang for help. we eventually got him back on his feet but he was very sore and lame behind.

bit of background info, he was found to have a diseased stiffle joint earlier this year and had been retired since August last year so i kind of expected to have to make the disision soon, though not this soon. he had been fine up untill last week when he been becoming a bit stiff so was still quite a shock when he couldnt get up on his on.

anyway, i made the decision there and then that it wasnt fair to keep him going, he didnt owe me anything and the least i could do was make sure he didnt suffer. even though i knew it was coming and ive seen it done before it did not lesson the blow. im devastated that i had to say goodboy to my gorgous man and he has left a big hole in the yard and in me that will never be filled.

Thank you my sweetheart for all the memorys, you may have been a pain in backside at times, but you were truly original, always went against the grain but you were so loving and forgiving when i got things wrong. ill never forget you, thanks for teaching me so many new things darling. xxx

It s a hard descision...but you can t be there 24hrs a day, if he had got stuck again with no one to help him it would have been a lot worse for him . So sad to watch them get older :-(

I am so sorry. You did the right thing. He was a lucky boy to have such a caring owner, who's only thought was of him. Bless you, it's so hard to say goodbye. had to do it myself, but treasure all your sweet memories of him, and he'll always be with you in spirit. Big (((hugs)) for you. RIP beautiful boy, gallop free, whole and well again x
