Hi!

This is a picture of my then 9 month old daughter on our little old shetland! Nothing like starting them young! :D

The plan is to start looking for her own 'proper' pony when she's about 2-3 years old - does anyone have any suggestions or tips for having a youngster with a pony or what sort of equipment is the best?
Thanks :)

aww :D weve got a photo of our daughter at about 5 weeks up there haha! those pony club saddles with the handles are fab!!! also a good hat! :) Id advise her to be closer to three than 2... for safety mainly :) xx

Thanks for the advice! :)

I have younger pictures too but avoided posting them as they have me looking supremely rough in them but hey, what the hell, I'd only just given birth...!

Suggest you get a pony that is knocking on a bit in years. Sort of seen it done it. Unlikely to break into a trot unless very severely coaxed!! There are usually loads of loan ponies as described above that families just cannot part with but are happy for them to have new jockies - try the pony club for starters.

By the way, just a little thought - why is your shetland wearing a rug? It really is best for these natives to regulate their own temperature as naturally they would drop off a bit in the winter to compensate for the spring grass. That is unless he is clipped out under there? I'm not sure where you are from but taking into account what your daughter and you are wearing it doesn't look that cold.

Please, if you don't believe me - next time it rains, leave the rug off and then part the pony's hair and you will find that he will be dry down by his skin.

Gorgeous picture though ;-)

She's 30 years +! She isn't carrying any fat & it had been raining quite heavily the night before (this was taken just as we'd arrived in the morning). It was a chilly morning too - my jacket is slightly padded. I don't mind leaving her rugless if it's just cold or just wet but not if it's cold AND wet, not at her age.

Believe me I don't rug for the sake of it - my big boy is fully clipped and wearing just 100g overnight at the moment - oh he lives out 24/7 at the moment too!

she looks like she's ready to go out hunting with that forward leg position :p :D

And hunt she shall! :p:D
Actually, it looks like it's my hand pushing her leg forward a bit...she'll soon learn when we get her her own 'proper' pony!!!!!! :)

Personally I wouldn't rush to buy a pony for a 2 year old. Why can't you use the old shetland? Could she not sit on another pony at the yard?
The amount that a 2 year old will ride is really not worth having a pony for imo. I have friends who made this mistake and wonder why a) pony becomes laminitic - not surprising as it gets no exercise by a 2 /3 year old and b) get lary when kid rides, again unsurprising as it is pulled out but once or so a week for a 20 minute walk.
Far better to wait until child is 5 or 6 years old and keen and maybe you could get one you could ride and keep going too. :)

sorry meant to say pic is very cute indeed! :D

She will sit on the little pony but the pony is very old and has done her stint of teaching kids to ride! She's my eldest niece's 1st pony!
I only say 2 or 3 as that's when my nieces started and both are very good riders - I know kids that started at 5 and 6 years old & later and don't have the nerve my nieces have - could just be coincidence tho.
No other ponies at the yard as there's just me & my family there - the next smallest one is 14.1hh who is 7/8 TB and TBH she'd probaly be safer on my 17hh IDx! :)

I started younger than that..... and I still have my 'basket saddle' for such an occasion :D My mum brought a pony to be her horses companion - so not neccessarily to be a kids pony, but he was my starting point!
I would imagine a loan pony is the best to find via pony club or something as suggested above. I think ponies such as this are worth their weight in gold and people can't bare selling them. My pony went on to be loaned and taught a huge amount of kids to ride, into his 30's!

Yes, it's clearly just the way you're holding her - I was only kidding, anyway. It's a cute pic :D
