A couple of weeks ago I assumed my mare had been bitten by an insect, as she had a lump on her 2nd thigh, about half an inch above it it was damp, almost a tiny sweat patch, with a couple of little blood spots.. She is only tunred out with one other horse and he is kept very firmly in his place by her so I pretty much ruled out it being a kick but you never know. The lump has now gone into a very fluidy haematoma, you can move the fluid around and I noticed today it almost looked a little droopy - if you put your hand on it it fills your hand. At times it looks bigger than others, and looks worse when she is at rest, as opposed to working. It doesn't seem to bother her at all. Do I need the vet to have it drained? Or would they do nothing? I assumed it would just disperse naturally? Or could it have been something else like a snake bite? What does everyone else think about this? Thanks for any advice.

My horse had a haematoma. Most vets leave them to reabsorb into the body. They tried to leave his but it was getting bigger and becoming a problem so they opened it up n let it drain. They don't normally like to do this tho cos it can introduce infection into the wound n create a further problem. Keep your eye on it for awhile.

Fly has one too. It actually swells up when i cold hose and then goes down again in minutes! Goodness knows how he got it. The vet scanned it (as she was scanning his tendons anyway) and basically you could see the "whooshing" of the blood in it. She said not to worry unduly, just keep an eye on it for any significant increase in size etc.

my horse had one my vets put local anastatic to numb it drained it but her on a course of anti botoics and told me to flush it twice daily for a week if you leave it like i did your horse could get blood posioning and be come very legthargy get th vet!
