Haematoma on chest? Has gone but...

Asti had a large haematoma develop under her stomach that worked its way forward til it was under her chest - hanging all jelly like. I was told its pretty ordinary to happen in in-foal mares. It was there for maybe 2 weeks then has gone, but has left crusty scabby spots under her chest and tummy. The scabs come off with a chunk of hair and are yellow and icky.

I'm thinking I'll have to bathe them to get the gunge off, salt water?

Its very like when our TB had lymphangitis - the stuff that comes out of that...

Just wondered if anyone has experienced this before and what did you do?

I dont know if my girl suffered with the same thing, but she got bitten really badly on her chest (the nasty b*ggers go for the areas where she has whorles (sp))

This then became very swollen and was hanging down (about 1.5 inches) and looked very much like a haematoma. I kept applying Sudocrem to it as it at least kept the flys off it.

It has now returned to normal size leaving three scabby spots (which I assume are the original bitemarks) which were also as you discribe.

Just thought id share that as maybe it was a nasty flybite which caused it? xx
 
I really don't think it was a fly bite. Have seen another mare with the same thing and I think its more pregnancy related.

It started further back around her huge tum, about the same time as her boobies started growing so I think its more related to the pregnancy and how big she is now.
 
ooohhh not long to go for the ginger one - are you all prepared...

Blimey - poor lass, glad ts gone, perhaps the skin split a bit when it had to stretch to accomodate the swelling (nursey head on)??
 
I am fairly sure that rather than haematoma its odema which is quite common in pregnant mares. I fed my mare 50 mls of apple cider vinegar - the unpasturised version not supermarket to avoid this problem.
