Two horses at work had a fight this morning - very scary! I was trying to seperate them but one went through or over the post and rail. I then did manage to get them apart. The one that broke the fence has skinned his chest in a couple of places, quite small, just a bit oozy. I have cleaned them up. But he has also got a hamatoma on the larger area. Its about the size of a clenched fist, in his cleavage, between his chest pads. He is sound but doesn't like it being touched. The owner is away for her once an year holiday so I really don't like to ring her. Do I need to call the vet? Will they do anything?

yes call the vet when my boy had an heamotomea i had to have it lanced and drained and he needed it flushing daily and he was on bute and anti b,s!x

Thanks for reply
I spoke to vet and shes happy if it doesn't get any bigger it can wait until owner gets back (Friday).
Fingers crossed!
Did your boys go eventually without any sign?

They can take forever to go, like months

Sounds an awkward place to have a haematoma at this time of year as rugs may rub it there in the middle of his chest. I guess the vet can advise though.

Trouble is in that position you cant bandage them to stop them refilling! But it will disapear after a time as the blood clots and gets broken down by the body. Or if they are drained then you have to do it frequently until they stop refilling.

One of my yearlings had a huge one on her thigh this year, she got on the wrong end of the dominant mare! It took just over 2 months to go. Vet said leave it alone because of the risk if introducing infection.

My mare had a huge haematoma on her stifle where she fell over on the lunge. I posted here and the general advice was that it would eventually go down which it has done after 6 weeks . My vet said don't lance as they just come back

Well got the vet this afternoon as it had doubled since yesterday. Its hanging almost between his front legs now, although its below where the rugs are I think a martingale will be out. The owner is back on Friday, I have a horrible feeling he is meant to be going to a big SJ comp early next week, last chance to qualify for something or other.
I don't know what the vet said as it was my day off so only went in to see how he was.
