Does anyone have any experiences of this they could share? Especially how long it took their dog to recover, whether it had any lasting effects etc.

Just got my dog back from vets yesterday after he was admitted first thing on Friday, with this horrific condition. I'm shocked that I'd never even heard of it, as it's something that can kill a dog so quickly. Feel so glad he was diagnosed and treated promptly by my vet.

Although home and eating well he's still not himself, seems tired and subdued - not surprisingly given what he's been through. On several tablets and back for check up tomorrow. Would just like some idea what to expect for him in his recuperation.
Thanks

PMy last dog used to have regular gastric bleeds in her early years....we had an intestinal and gastric biopsy done when she went in for her spay and she had a colony of helicobacter bacteria in her villi..Both in stomach and intestine...
This was a dog affected by clostridium bacteria, proteus bacteria and E. coli ,from age one, with repeated bouts of fever, diarrhea and skin ulcers....low autoimmune system.
She was managed until she died at age twelve by
Probiotics. Various antibiotics eg flagyl,Tylan ...both long term..at very low doseage..
Ranitidine(Zantac) to protect stomach in both injectable and tablet form...
Regular stool testing as her low immunity made her susceptible to worm infestation( despite heartgard plus..
All in all a nightmare, but the dog responded well to treatments ,then would relapse...

Ok ...if this was my dog in this new situation for you...you have to pinpoint the reason the gut lining is being damaged. The vet will do blood tests, ask you about diet to see if he has any triggers that upset his system.( we did an Elisa test re food allergies).he may do an ANA test to see how strong his immune system is.He will test the faeces to see if the dog has a parasite..we often gave hills a/ d tinned food,a purée,put into her mouth ...to keep her strength up when she was at a low ebb...it was a godsend and kept her alive.
It is horrific the first time this happens..keep calm.We were at the point of giving up after a particularly bad bleed...we carried her in our arms to the vet to says she's bled so badly we don't think we can keep her going. The vet put her on medrol,a steroid,as one last try...and this smal dose got her through the last eight years of her life.

Hi,I am sorry to hear about your dog;I have a Jack russel with the same problem, she suffers from these bouts a few times a year. The vet has been unable to find the reason for these attacks, we simply do not know what triggers them off.She has been poorly these last three weeks; the only thing we can do is to give her antibiotics(Flagil, amongst others)watch over her diet,NO fatty foods whatsoever. She started having these episodes 4years ago; she is now 13 and as long as she can lead a happy and painless life we shall continue with the treatment. So this is just to tell you that there is light at the end of the tunnel!
Good Luck !

Thanks both of you. Am really hoping it is not going to be a recurrent problem for him. The scary thing is there is no known cause.

Yes, dog had an episode a few weeks ago, partially caused by pancreatitis. Has recovered ,vet did say that they didn't know why it happened.
