How do you have your hair whnen you compete. I have about 1 inch above shoulder length hair - was wondering how long it has to be before I can get one of those doughnut thingies....or what the best way of keeping it tidy is? Any pics would be grand!!

I'd love to have nice hair competing. I fold mine up under my hat but it makes me look like a boy.. Or I wear a hairnet and scrunchie and try and make it look nice but my hat comes so low down at the back that it just looks rubbish and catches on the coller of my jacket :(
No idea about a hair dohnut, will b interesting to see what others say, although might that not catch on jacket coller too?

When I had long hair I just used a matching colour scrunchie to jacket and still used hairnet. When short I still use hairnet because short hair never stays put even if you stuff it in your hat! ;)

ALWAYS a neat tidy bun.

Hair into pony tail, twist 'tail' around, secure with bands, hair nets & bun nets. NEVER a scrunchie.

At the moment, my hair is only about 2" long so I can't do anything with it. However, when it was very long (down to my hips), it was put into a single plait, then the plait made into a bun and netted with several nets and lots of pins and hair spray so it stayed put.

When my hair gets long enough to go into a ponytail, I have a false bun made from my hair when it was cut off which I will use with a net.

The only time I have used a scrunchie on my bun is on an evening performance as I have one which matches my stock for a little bling which is acceptable on these occasions.

Mine is now about 4" from my hips.... and thick enough for about 3 people! It's a pain. It's either plaited and folded, banded, then with a net and a discreet band over the top of that, or I have before just plaited it and put my show shirt and jacket on over the top, with it lay flat down my back :o It kind of worked, stock kept it in place! xD (dressage only!!)

I've got long VERY THICK hair and cannot tuck it all up in my helmet as I would need a massive size hat to fit it all in there. I just go to do a pony tail but then fold my hair up so that a small "folded" bit of hair is hanging down and use a black velvet scrunchie (so it matches my helmet) to secure it and then tuck the rest of my hair that it pointing upwards, into my hat.

Hope that makes sense, this is how it looks like:

GASP -that is what I do an crazymare said I was a numpty.

Currently hair is down to just below my shoulder blades (growing down from ear length) It used to be waist lengthish. It is very thick and could be mistaken for a small shrub :D
I plait hair and wind plait round itself, put one net doubled over the wound plait, then put two blunt clips (the sort that are flexible and ping shut) where they will go under the hat, then put another net over the whole thing, then put hat on. Sadly no pics

Sorry yorskg... that sounds awfully complicated.. but GOOD!!!

I ain't got any pics, but I put my hair, just down to collar length, in a pony tail with a skinny hair band. Then I have georgeous subtle black velvet bow hair clip which has a hairnet bag attached and the pony tail goes in there, et voila, smart hair. Looks great with a beagle or crash hat.
I was given mine, but try Robinsons catalogue or Claires the hair accessory shop.

Mine is just above shoulder length, a longish bob. It's also very fine so won't stay in a pony tail very easily. I put a hairnet on and then put it in a pony tail with the hair bobble (a thinnish one the same colour as my hair) over the hairnet. The net helps to give a bit of grip so my pony tail doesn't fall out and it looks tidy as any bits that do work loose from the hair bobble stay in the net.

Daughter's is below shoulder length, and I used to plait it, then fold the plait in half, then in half again so it's about 5 inches long and very neat, hairnet over the lot and secure with bobbles, with a PC scrunchie to neaten the top.

However PC now say it can't be plaited as it's not safe if a pony trod on the plaited, or it can get caught. I've tried and tried to do it by twisting and folding and a hundred hair bobbles, but it never looks as neat as it did when plaited, all the ends poke out of the hairnet at odd angles.

When my hair was longer (midway down shoulders) I used to put it into a low ponytail, wind the tail around into a bun, and then wrap a hairnet over the bun a couple of times and then twist and put the rest of the hairnet over my head (I had a giant hairnet). Sometimes used a few pins to make the bun stay put, depended what mood my hair was in!

Now my hair is jaw length, I just wear a smaller hairnet. My hair is just long enough to look really scruffy sticking out from under a hat without hairnet!

Crickey! Thats a pretty strict pony club! Half of the girls in ours would be in trouble then.

Re the doughnut things, you really need at least shoulder length hair to wrap it around. You need about a two-three inch pony tail first.

Putting it into a net and then a pony tail sounds the best plan.

By the way, the pic of the scrunchie and hairnet looked very smart as far as I'm concerned! I don't do much showing, but my son qualified for ponies uk regional finals in WH this year, and I've never seen so many bows, plaits, and ribbons to match the browbands. That was just the mothers leading the kids too! (Sorry showing people - I'm just jealous of their attention to detail!)

Not really complicated, just difficult to write sensibly! :D
I always double net, as was given VERY FIRM instructions, by a lady who knows, the first time I went hunting that double netting was essential. :D

LOL, obviously the judge didn't think so as I won 1st that day in dressage! I always wear my hair like that (and get a ribbon!) except when I'm wearing a bowler for side saddle (then I have enough space to do a proper bun). With a riding helmet, my hair is so thick that there isn't enough space at the bottom of my helmet to do a bun. My bun is the size of a good size orange and that's even with hair brushed over my ears to take up some of the hair!!

You can see from my side saddle photo that the size of my bun due to the crazy thickness of my hair, would be impossible to do under a helmet so the folded pony tail with the ends tucked in, is the only way under a helmet for those with stupidly thick hair.
