Hiya all. One of my girls had been out for several months in the same rug for most of the time. I brought her in for a groom today and took it off and noticed that tufts of hair are falling out in one large spot. Does anyone know what this is and what I can do to resolve it. Thanks all

It’s always a good idea to change rugs regularly to avoid pressure spots. It also maybe that she’s too hot under her current rug.

Where weight rug are you using?

It looks like rain scald and is probably where moisture is being held under the rug and then fungus is enjoying the warm, damp conditions.
Best treatment is to get the rug off as much as possible and let the sunshine(!) and fresh air get to it. As above, try not to leave the horse is one rug the whole time. I get rugs off them as often as possible, especially as it has been so mild this year.

Basically this might be worth using a lighter rug with a thin liner underneath so it can be washed, I also find with a liner and rug the air circulation is a bit better and I have several rugs which I swap about.

I also take them off whenever they come into the stable so they get fresh air I know not always possible if living out.

Yep it is just a bit of rain scald. I normally take rugs off more than I do but it has just been tricky as I just moved them to a new place and she can be a bit tricky to catch. I would use a lighter rug but even though it is warm we have had over 25mph winds and they have been colder. I suspect it was just sweat from her going bonkers in the field that got trapped underneath. I have taken her rug off and washed the area with saline then dried. Sorry for being a dimwit, I haven’t seen rain scald for a while!

The weather we've been having is grim, unless you're changing rugs every AM and PM I feel like you can't win.

I've started using a snuggy hood body under my horse's rug, and washing it regularly. That seems to stop the build up of grease and general damp grottiness.
