I am in a dilemma I love my boys long flowing maine. However over the sumer he has lost a few inches above the whithers I believe its dues to the fly rug (Amigio light weight with neck cover ) I am so sad ;-(
Luckily the worst of the flies are over so he now does not need it. However winter will be upon us soon and Ill have to rug him up. I am now worries that this will further exacerbate the problem. He has an amigo Rambo turnout rug.
How do you all keep your horses maine's in tip top condition ?
What is the best supplement for hair growth ?

Combo rugs are the worst for rubbing out manes:( - I never use them.

With the amount of mane Armas has I would just use 'normal' rugs with no necks - his mane will grow back:)
How long does it typically take ? He has lost about 4'' around the withers its about 1/2'' long.

Simple - don't use neck covers. ;)

I have an Amigo Mio and I cut the neck section off it. I've also cut the neck off a Rhino turnout. It's no good having an arab with half a mane and they don't get cold in standard necked rugs anyway.

The grey in the Rhino.

The chestnut is in the same rug, minus the neck section and plus lots of mud.

I only buy standard neck rugs now.

ETA.

It took 6 months for the mane to look OK again, a year for it to be fully grown (it was a long mane though).

Depends how fast his hair grows - my cob grows her mane at about an inch a month - is ridiculously good at growing the stuff:D My grey boy took nearly a year to grow his mane back properly from being rubbed out by a rug BUT he is a WB so doesn't grow mane like Armas:) and manes may grow more slowly over the winter with less daylight etc
