Hairline fracture in horses leg..

Hey everyone,

I'm just wondering if anyone can help, I bought a 5 year old (now 6) tb mare last year. She's an ex racer (raced 2/3years ago) ..

Just a little bit of her history, when she was a racer she raced 7 times her 8th race she was entered into a week before she got a hairline fracture in one of her legs my yard owner trained her to race and the owner of the horse didn't pay him back for vet or livery bills so yard owner took horse as payment.

Horse had 6weeks off and was then sold on to a nice guy who bought her to breed from (she has fantastic bloodlines) she ended up with infection and then it was too late in the season to breed from and then she came to me out of the field not knowing anything.

Since I've had her (a year on the 16th august tomorrow) I've been bringing her on slowely then she lost a lot of weight this winter so she has been in work since around march time ..

She is completly sound and my yard owner said he can't remember what leg it was without digging out the notes.

This mare LOVES to jump .. And I'm hoping that she's going to be a nice allrounder so I can take her low level jumping xc dressage etc but at the back of my mind I can't help but worry that if I carry on is it going to cause her problems later on?

She is fine on all fours and I only found out that she had a hairline fracture about 2/3days ago and it's playing on the back of my mind.

I'm not really sure what my question is really but should I just take it easy and lay off the jumping even though she loves it or what?

Will she have problems later on etc :(
 
The only one I know of with a hairline fracture had (I think) 8 weeks box rest and then gradually back into full work. It never caused any problems and he went on to a successful career as a hurdler and steeplechaser ( the fracture happened before he ran in his first bumper) so I wouldn't be undually worried about it once he'd had his box rest etc.
 
Forget about it! It won't stop her being able to jump! It's a bone. They heal just fine for the most part. Same as a human. If you broke your arm, once fixed it wouldn't stop you from playing tennis ever again would it?

It's lovely that she now has an owner that is really looking after her but really, you should have no bother at all with the leg.
 
Oh brilliant that's all I needed to hear really! I didn't really think anything of it at first and then over the last couple of days I got a bit worried! She was only off for 6 weeks then back to normal, she's brilliant now loves her work and routine she's a very intelligent mare lol
 
Yep, my 18yo had a full spiral fracture from fetlock to knee 2 years ago and was out hacking in 12 weeks and jumping as normal after 16 weeks. Hasnt given him a days trouble since.
