Has anyone had any experience of this? What was the healing time and did the horse come back to full work? Have tried googling but nothing helpful came up.
my horse had one last year, it healed but he has suffered complications from bearing extra weight on his other leg, but he was expected to make a full recoveery
My younger mare had an hairline fracture to her cannon bone when she was 18 months old(They thought it was the splint bone at first until they managed to xray her once the swelling had gone down). She went on box rest and I put her in the smallest stable on the yard so she could not move around much and had a Robert jones bandage on.I did not want her to be cross tied as I thought she would get stressed out so after discussions with my vet it was agreed that we would do a bandage only up to her knee but use the same technic as the RJ Bandage ( when you flicked it with your fingers it sounded as if you where hitting plaster) She was in for 3 months. She can back into full work....
My horse had a unicortical fracture of his cannon bone- one side was fractured, not all the way through. He made a full recovery..he is back in full work, jumping - the lot.
He was on box rest for about 11 weeks, then in-hand grazing twice a day, then a small tun-out paddock.....then back in the big field with the rest of the horses.
I had to initially start off in walk, then intoriduce trot and canter slowly and build it up gradually.
Very stressful time, PM me if you want to talk/more info.
My TB fractured his cannon bone when he was racing. I took him on as a 4 year old. Trainer told me he had fractured it (not sure of the full details) but I have never had any problems with it in the 6 years I have had him (touches wood). In fact, had they not told me I never would have known. Hoping for you x.
Not quite the same but my boy fractured his radius. He had about 12 weeks cross tied, then a further 8 wks box rest with in hand walking, yeah right
. Then it was very limited turnout, followed by a week proper turnout, then I rode him again. That was 2 years ago, he is now as good as new. Oh he did have to have a fragment of bone removed about 3 mths later as it didnt dissolve as expected.
It was awful at the time but is a distant memory now. Good luck.
My boy(dark Dun in my siggie) had a hairline fracture of the canon bone. Initially it was thought it was a splint but on xray it was identified to be the cannon bone. A large bone callous formed over the site which dissolved once the fracture healed. He was on box rest for 3 months and was then hand grazed/walked in hand for another couple of months. He was then brought back in to work very slowly and not turned back out until he was fit and cantering. He probably could have gone out earlier but the ground was very hard so after discussion with the vet he was not turned out again until the ground had softened. In total he was in for nearly a year but that was more sue to ground conditions than his recovery. He is back in full work, jumping, dressage and fun rides with no further problems.
