Has anyone taken their heavy hairy cob to a southern European country to live? like Greece Spain Italy......etc
How did they fare with the hot climate?
What about midges and mosies etc.

Hi,

Ive bought my 2 appaloosas over to Spain (nearly 4 years ago now) plus one 17 year old Welsh Sec A pony, (last year) I also know a lady with a X Clydesdale, and someone who had a fell type pony, plus 2 very hairy mini shetlands

yes they cope very well, best to bring them over between October-March when the weather is cooler, so they can adapt,

in the summer mine live in a paddock with lots of pine trees for the shade, and they never sweat, which is unlike the UK when they were stabled in the day in the summer, and they would stand sweating in a hot airless stable.

we did have to give our Welsh (Champ) a trace clip this winter (his first here) as even though where I am, it can get down to -6'c at night, the days can be quite warm 10-18'C (in winter) so he got a little hot when worked,

In the summer I find the horses seem to do an extra moult and get a very fine coat, as for flies , midges etc.... not a lot different from the UK, I use fly sprays and fly masks,

plus its not as wet, so no mud fever :-) no mud for 6 months of the year,

where are you thinking of moving too? just remember to pack, clippers, fly stuff, and rugs, (well it does get cold where I am)

if you need to know anything else just pm me if you want, im quite happy to help.

Jenny
