Two to clip - I can't bear the wooliness any longer! I've promised to teach the girl who rides Spike the Spare to clip - so hopefully she will a; be really good at it, and able to do most of the work, and b; not too bothered about my neuroticism about leg lines being in the right place!

Haven't actually stopped to consider whether Spike the Spare will actually behave - I'm just going to assume he's fine until proven otherwise!

Am I going to do blanket clips as planned, or will i get bored with clipping lines in about 30 seconds flat and whip the lot off? Answers on a postcard...

I am cringing at my clipping - did it the other evening under the barn lights as was pee'd off with how sweaty he was getting (coat had fairly grown back since end of November) - however keep spotting bits I've missed... driving me mad! And my lines are rubbish, so keep wanting to neaten them up... he will have no hair left if I start, so am keeping hands off the clippers - it'll only look bad til it grows in a bit...

So be prepared for your newbie clipper to end up with results like mine :P

I clipped for the first time ever, intending to do a blanket clip but I was awful and the lines took forever to get right. Would have taken the lot off if my Mum hadn't reined me in. Bet you get bored too!

I went with a full clip for my cob this Winter. However, that was back in October and it's almost completely grown out again. :( I was hoping not to have to bother clipping again but she gets so sweaty when ridden and also gets mud stuck in her belly fluff in the field which is very time consuming to remove. Best get the clippers oiled....
:(

I've never found this to be true. I waited over 3 weeks for my poor mare to look a bit better after a twilight clip and it still looked awful so I went over her again and now she looks beautiful. I always take the lot off as she likes to fidget at the crucial moment.

I've only recently started clipping and I tend to just whack the lot off. Old boy has his legs kept on but the other two have everything taken off.
I must admit I prefer it that way. Oldie will get his legs taken off the next time he gets done as he looks a bit messy compared to the others. :o

Bit of a resounding fail! Note to self - check blades are sharp before attempting to clip a horse who has a coat like a yak. We are affectionately referring to this as a "side sunroof"

I am on clip three of the winter already. How can you only just be clipping Aus?! Or not infact if that photo is anything to go by. Stylish :p

Ha, love the picture!

I just wanted to say its great to see people teaching their sharers things. Unfortunately there are a lot of people out there who won't spend the time, or won't because the person they will be teaching won't do it as well as them.

Yeah, mine always gets bored about halfway through the second side... so ends up looking a bit Picasso.... last one was ok after a few weeks, when he looked gingery again rather than black, so am hoping this is the same.

And I am exaggerating slightly, it's not too bad except for three places on the off side, which my instructor has promised aren't noticeable until I point it out...

I will, however, likely end up neatening it up in another week or so...

And nice, Auslander. Makes me feel less guilty about my horse looking like he does :P

Alf was in his stable, waiting for his second clip of the winter. This was Spike, who has only been back in work a few weeks. I wouldn't have bothered, but he is a bisy little thing, who sweats buckets out of sheer joie de vivre!

I'm all for encouraging people to learn to do things properly - i've been clipping for 20 years, and I'm pretty good at it, so it seems only right that I share the skill. My old horse used to get clipped about once a fortnight, just because so many of my clients wanted to learn how! i used to clip professionally, and as well as offering the usual range of clips - I also did clipping lessons, where people could clip their own horses, with my clippers, under close scrutiny!

I am a bit precious about leg lines following the muscles though - I have been known to physically stop people before they do something awful!

Poor lad - he's such a lovely little horse, and now he looks like a muppet! Glad I did him, not Alf - so I dont have to be seen out riding in that state!

I'm sure he won't mind :P

I'm the same about clip lines on the muscles - I used to be quite good, clipping quite a lot of horses every year, but after only full body and half face clipping my own horse for a couple of years, and then not clipping at all last year, I'm very, very rusty with lines... and my monkey of a horse compared to my previous angel!! (Geoff bites the clippers, not fear but TICKLISH!)

Little monkey!
Alf is fabulous to clip - he even moves his legs if I poke them. I clipped him out last time, except for his legs and half a head, and he loved it - did the anteater nose thing.

Mine bit the clippers at the head end, and lifted his legs every time I touched his belly with the clippers... chaser clip it was then... nearly took off half his mane too as is head shy and clippers near ears weren't appreciated. Then he got bored on side two and decided to paw the ground, fidget and try to smush me and offending clippers against the wall. And I thought exracers were supposed to be good to clip?
