Half round fence posts suitable as ground poles?

Hi

I am looking at getting some more poles suitable for the purposes of walk / trot / canter poles opposed to for jumping but they are at least £20+ a pole plus delivery so I am looking for alternatives.

I know there are concerns with round poles (both wooden and plastic) rolling if knocked / horse lands on them awkwardly and so I wondered whether the half round fence posts would be suitable. They are much cheaper and the flat side would mean they wouldn't roll if knocked but the rounded side still gives some height so the horse would know they were there. I would either use paint or electrical tape to make them brightly coloured.

Any thoughts / experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Absolutely! I have used them for years as has my trainer - for many years before that. Buy them from local farm supply shop and paint ourselves. So much safer as trot poles and for placing poles in front of jumps. Also handy as V-Poles for grid work or side poles for loose/ lunge jumping. So many uses!

I use them all the time. They don't role away when kicked/knocked. You can get half round rails or posts from the local feed merchants or agri store for about £3 each for posts and about £7/8 for rails (last time I bought them)
