Half spoon jointed snaffle

Does anyone know the uses for this ? and is it ok to ride in

I bought one today thinking its just like a snaffle but am not sure what its used for ???

I think i have seen these used on first ridden ponies... no idea what they do though!

its a bit like the full cheek snaffle, bit more weighted i think
