Vet advised I could hand graze horse during rehab. Currently allowed 10 mins walking on hard level surface twice per day.I do a bit less than this and let horse hand graze for 30 mins. During hand grazing he has head down eating and does less than 1 circuit of small level paddock.
Has anyone else done this? Is this excessive?

I used to hand graze my gelding for 30 mins twice a day in a small pen (just in case he tried to take off).
I started off doing less as per vet’s instructions and he just box walked and reared in his stable. I came to the conclusion that 2 x 30 mins kept him sane during his box rest and as the tendon has healed well I would do the same again. Hopping your rehab goes well.

Tendon rehab will be controlled walking on level surfaces and increasing time as agreed with vet.
Please do keep to the 2 x 10 mins every day as this will start the strengthening up.
Hand grazing is additional.

it's important to do the exercise as well as the hand grazing because the controlled exercise is what gently stresses and organises the healing fibres.

When my mare was recovering from a hock injury, she was supposed to be on box rest for 6 weeks. With the assumption that medical knowledge has moved on in humans where they get you out of bed almost straight away after an operation, I contacted the vet to ask if I could hand graze. They agreed, so for those 6 weeks I took her out twice a day, an hour each time to just hand graze. I believe it kept her sane during this time of box rest. It also allowed us an incredible bonding time and we are so close now. I know it will depend on injury and temperament of horse, but I am a great believer in this kind of therapy

I also added the hand grazing on top of the controlled walking. To differentiate I used a bridle for exercise and a head collar for hand grazing.
