For years I have always used a wide paintbrush to apply hoof oil and pig oil (separately!) Having still got a couple of Foxhound puppies here the pig oil brush vanished so the only thing I had to use was a paint roller, the small size and with the medium length handle.
What a favour those darn hounds have done, it is great, you can do all four legs from one side, no bending, easy peasy.
My second hint is to use the stainless steel wire pot cleaners for removing mud.
The type that come in packets as little round balls. If you pull them apart you can plait them together, I do this with three and then weave another three through the plait so it is a good handful.
Even the clipped and fit horses do not mind it used on their bellies or faces and it takes the mud off easier than anything else, does not rust and so lasts forever (well until the hounds get hold of it!)
