I have come to the decision that my 36 year old Arab x is ready to retire now. She has had a good innings, and we have done two of the three things I wanted to do with her before she retires, local showing and regional showing. We hope to still do a pleasure ride before the end of the show season but then she is going to live the life of riley with my other retired veteran.

Sovereign Pretty Lady came to me last spring, she had been retired by her last owner because she was too hot to handle and her novice owner had lost all of her confidence due to the old gals want to gallop. As soon as she started her retirement she began to go into herself and never seemed happy at just being in the field as a companion. Gradually she deteriorated and my friend knew she couldn't give her the home she needed so put her up for sale. Sov dropped weight through the winter and by spring looked terrible. My husband bought her for £50 and we feed her up and gradually brought her back in to light work including hacking and a little showing with my daughter.

This summer she has really struggled to hold her weight and although I managed to show her myself twice in July and she did well, I have noticed a change in her that says she is now ready to take it easy. I am on a mission to get her weight up for winter now and hoping that one last pleasure ride while she is still fit will be possible but it all depends on how she gets on this month.

She has been a wonderful friend the past one and a half years and gave me back my love of riding. I will be sad to not get anymore showing with her but my goal was only to do a little this season anyway and she proved that she was still as good as her younger counterparts by coming 3rd in a local ridden veteran class last month against much younger horses and ponies.

She will still get the odd short hack or walk round our crop fields, just to stop her getting stale and give her a change of scenary, so she won't be one of those 'waiting for god' kind of ponies.

I just wanted to mark her retirement in someway and thought here would be a nice place to let her say goodbye to her working life, as this was the place I came to when I was trying to get her out of her pelham, where I asked for advice on her feeding, where we traced her previous owners and where I shared alot of our photos. She will probably not even be remembered but I wanted anyone who does remember her to know how grateful we are for you help.

What an absolute stunner she is for her age.

You really have done wonders with her, you should be proud of yourself.

She'll enjoy her retirement being pampered with the odd hack here & there.

XxX

I can't beleive her age she looks so good! I like the sound of her retirement, she is very lucky to found such a good home to enjoy for the rest of her days.

Thankyou. She has been hard work and worried me the whole time I have had her but she is now a perfect pony, its a shame she isn't younger but I wouldn't have it any other way now. I feel like people can finally see that she wasn't a naughty pony, just misunderstood.

She looks amazing and is a credit to your care...my old girl is 28 (a bit younger than yours!) and like your plans, still has the odd hack round the back fields or down the road just to have a nose about.

I love the oldies, she definately fell on her hooves when your twos paths crossed. May she have a long and wonderful retirement..she sounds wonderful.

Wow!!! She looks wonderful for her age!! Well done, and what a great thing you have done to take on such an old girl.....

That's a lovely post and a great tribute to the end of her working career. She does look amazing for her age so well done for keeping her looking so good.

OMG!!! she looks incredible. Well done to you and she's obviously been very loved and very happy - I'm sure she'll enjoy her retirement and continue being a very happy girl!!!!

Thanks everyone. I was called mad for buying such an old pony but I knew what I was doing and I wanted her to have a good last few years and hopefully she will now enjoy her retirement.

She looks amazing and scarily similar to my friends 35yr old part Arab, she is retired now but is still ridden round the field by my friends grandchildren and we also take her out for wanders to keep her interested. She especially loves going blackberry picking!! She just loves to be involved with whatever is going on!!

What a girl! Do you know the Arab side of her breeding at all? - she is living history :)

Sadly we don't, we got back to the late 1970's early 1980's when tracing past owners but prior to that nothing, until she went to her 1990's home she didn't have a passport or papers but thankfully putting a tracing post on several websites got us her earliest owner so we were able to find quite a lot out about her. She was originally from Redditch in the midlands and spent most of her early life in that area under the stable name Bonnie. I am in constant contact with her owner before me and her 1990's -2005 owner is a client on the livery yard where I work. I remember seeing her 20 years ago hacking past my old yard with her previous owner and thinking how much I would want to own her....I never realised that I would actually have her myself lol

Lovely lady have a very soft spot for chestnut arab mares as I have had two she looks wonderful. According to the Koran you will be blessed.
