I thought I would pop him over a couple of poles today- seriously small cross poles and in half an hour I managed to get him over about 5!! He just doesnt seem to have the heart for it anymore... Im so keen on taking any prizes for jumping so I have decided to stick to DR!! I know i am no anky and flint isnt satchmo but I would like to think that it is something to work towards and be both seem to get more enjoyment from the partnership we have when we do school- i have found it more rewarding...so come on 2012!!!

is he refusing fences then? are you sure he isn't in any pain somewhere??

If you have had all the checks then ignore me - and good luck in your new 'career'

Its not pain- he has been checked since I have had him and the dentist (which was BLOODY expensive!!) he just backs off coming to fences and humps on the spot- its pointless me forcing him to do it- I do think the last owners had pushed him too hard- but for something that I dont want to do- I would rather have an easier life! lol

in my opinion you know flint better than anyone and your judgement is probably spot on.

Sometimes horses that have breaks from things get better when they come back! we had a horse that was appauling hacking, he didn't hack for two years due to medical problems and owner was pregnant. Two years later he returned and was suddenly a well behaved schoolmaster out!

I have had similar problems with a horse I had a couple of years ago. When I first had him he would start humping his back if you asked him to jump, and then he got worse and started doing it if you asked any flat work of him. I think his previous owners had also pushed him too hard jumping when he was no where near fit enough to trot down the road, nevermind jumping.

I took him out of the school and spent about 3 months of only walking on the roads - increasing time spent out, and then slowly introduced trot and canter over a total time period of 6 months. I think just given the chance to go right back and start getting fit again slowly did him the world of good - and after that he was an absolute saint, and went of to a lovely teenager to do some dressage and showing. And he is still lovely now!! I keep in touch with him every so oftern - lovely boy!!!

Not that I am saying that a lack of fitness is the same basic cause of your problem - but sometimes a breather and change of direction will do them the world of good.

Sounds like something must have happened at the previous owners'.

I agree, do what you are both happy with. Maybe in time you can add the odd bit of jumping and he might see it as more fun. You could always try lunging/free schooling over jumps?
Dressage is the best anyway, stick to that!
