Oooo... not long now.

Hannah's quarters have really slackened and she now has more of a triangle shape to her bottom (I promise I will take some more photos).

Since she has been going out more her bag has decreased a little in size and he legs have stopped filling (she can now go out for a few hours every day in her own little field).

However, tonight she had a few drops of clear liquid on one of her udders. I wiped it off for her and have watched for quite a while and she seems fine. She was quite restless this afternoon and was a little bit loose when I brought her in, but that all seems to have righted itself.

So, she has a month left before we get to see Little Hannah (fingers crossed anyway)

I'm so excited for you. I plan to put my mare in foal sometime in the future (not just yet as she is only a baby herself) and just thinking about your new addition when it arrives gets me excited about one day having one of my own. I'm really looking forward to seeing lots of piccies. Have seen a friends mare foaling and it is just the most amazing thing ever. Thats what got me wanting to be a midwife really!!!

I can imagine! You must be so tired alreay lets hope shes not too late.

Hows the trailer vision working BTW? Did you say shes going to wear a foaling alarm?

Oh it's not long now!

She's presumably due for a fresh tetanus shot and you've got your wormers all sorted, got your iodine or whatever you are using......and you have your long gloves at the ready!!

You'll both be fine I'm sure; it's soo exciting.

Oh wow this all sounds so familar! Was me just over a year ago.

Goodluck with everything, I know how you're feeling but try to get some rest, those nights you end up checking every hour do take it out of you.

Loads of photos too!!!!

The trailer vision thing has been set up tonight, but dizzy me did not charge the batteries, so they are on charge now and will be up and running from tomorrow onwards! From what I saw of it (we wanted to check whether it was working) it looks fab and will be a great way of keeping my eyes on Hannah without having to keep disturbing her.

I haven't got anything organised yet for the actual birth apart from her bedding has now been changed... I am planning on getting a lot of it done this weekend. I am also going to have to phone the foaling alarm people as only booked it for 26th Feb and think I might need it earlier!

Jabs done two weeks ago and wormed yesterday...

There you go then - no worries. You just need to take a mattress down to the stable and then you are all set!!

Te he... thinking of borrowing a friend's caravan so I can try to get some sleep!

Trying not to think about it too much though as she still has a month to go so I think I might have to put a cork in her to keep it in until nearer her due date.

What could the little droplets of clear liquid have been coming out of one of her udders?

awww shes starting to get herself ready.dont worry you wil be fine.just inform your vet and make sure everything you can get ready is got ready!things happen really fast once it starts.hope all goes well, its a wonderful experience it really is!
my mare started to get redish crystals on her teats, then her udder started to get much bigger a week before she foaled and she got clear liquid which got really creamy the day before she foaled.she left little puddles and got it alldown her legs(so they looked sticky) the night before she foaled.

No no believe me I remeber EVERY second of it! Was all worth it though.

Ooo sounds like she's really thinking about moving things right along!! I've had 4 early, 2 of which were 3 + weeks early! That's out of 10 foaled so far! Don't be fooled by her last breeding date, watch her like a hawk, she should let you know almost exactly when she's gonna go! Keep an eye on her bag, if she doesn't walk it off when out at grass, then she's likely even closer! Good luck hunny!!!

Must haves for a foaling kit:

Long examination vet gloves
blue/purple spray for the naval - or iodine (we use blue spray - you should see the state of my left thumb nail
blush.gif
)
A phosphate enema - a BIG bottle (IMO it's essential, to help the foalie pass the meconium)
String - NOT baler twine, too slipery, garden string is best IMO - to tie up the placenta with, to help it drop out naturally!! Also may be necessary to tie off the naval, if it continues to bleed!

Bran - make her a nice HOT bran mash after she has foaled, she'll really appreciate it! Hot water, bran and some mix is all you need.

S_N... I am so glad you are back online, although you have now frighetened me to death

Hannah's quarters were still slack this morning, and her bag was up but I do not know whether it has gone down as my husband brought her in and he thinks the whole thing is just weird!

Last night, her flower (lady bits, but nicer term
laugh.gif
) was much slacker and I could open it (husband couldn't quite believe what I was showing him) and there was quite a gaping hole down there... she usually clamps it shut and you can't really open it.

The red crystals... I am sure Hannah looked like she had some of those on her udders last night, but I couldn't work out what they were!

Remember she's a big roomy mare and she's not been in work for a while!

Also the vulva can open like this from a month prior to foaling in some mares!

RED crystals????

Yep... llittle red crystals on her teats. Vet has said don't worry, some can get them???

Hannah is so much happier now she is getting out every day, which I am so pleased about because she looked so depressed the last few weeks.

Her bag was up again this morning, but her udders are still loose and floppy. I think she probably has another 2 weeks to go, fingers crossed. Not organised at all yet! Her stomach has dropped a lot over the past two weeks and I have noticed that the foal is not moving around as much. This did panic me at first, but then I thought it probably doesn't have that much room anymore.

Interesting about the red crystals - I've not come across that before - you learn something new every day huh

In the last 2 weeks/1 month of pregnancy, the foal will move around less - don't worry! I'm glad she's happier now!
