Could someone answer a couple of questions for me (or send me a PM if you prefer):

With regards to a young Hanoverian colt, I am assuming that you can have the initial stallion assessment done by the BHHS (I notice the BHHS are £200 for this), or do they have to go back to Germany for initial assessment? Would Germany be the same for cost?

Then if a colt has to go to germany for a 30 day test - how long would he need to be in Germany before this to be prepared? At what age and again an indication of this cost?

Then if the colt was to stay on for the 70 days (if he passes the 30) - would this immediately follow the 30 days? So am guessing it would be at the age of 3? and an idea of cost?

Sorry for the questions.

i would like to know the answer to this question too. Also am i right in thinking that a colt can go to the assessment at two and not be presented for grading to see if it is worthwhile sending him for grading the year after.

Sorry to hijack the thread

ok i will help where i can and i am sure someone will fill in the gaps but as i understand it..
Initial stallion assessment is done at the main Hann show in Sept for 2 + year old colts, they need to jump and go loose and have xrays done beforehand, the dam must be performance tested, if they pass then yes they have to go to Germany and do their 30 day test as a 3yr old if they pass this then they have to do the 70 day normally 4 yr old (I think they can cover a certain amount of mares during that time but i may be wrong) i think if they do well at the Bundeschampionate then they dont have to do the 70.
Older stallions can go forward and if they have competed to a high level and they pass i dont think they have to do the testing.

Alot of colts go straight out to Germany once they are licensed so they can be prepared in the correct way expected for the testing (it can make a huge difference as to what centre they test at aswell, our Oldenburg stallion passed his 30 test with ease but not so good on his 70 but he went to different centre and the trainer was not really in there

) Cost wise is around 700E a month for training (where we were) but i cant remember the testing cost but OH thinks it was around £1500.

Hope that helps a little bit

ps i know a couple of people in Germany who would prepare a colt.

Full breeding approval is a bit complicated, with licensing as part 1.

The BHHS licensing is the same format as in Germany, so a stallion licensed in the UK, is also approved in Germany.

3 year + stallions presenting for licensing also have to be riddden.

The 30 day test is done by 3 year olds & if they score over 7.0 they can breed up to 50 mares with their temporary breeding licence.
This is also extended to 4 year olds if they compete at A level & gain a score of 7.5 or more.

As far as I can remember last year I paid 1200 Euros for the 30 day test.

I think its essential to have them trained for several months by someone who regularly prepares young stallions for testing, as there is a downside if they fail.

The 70 day test has to be passed by the end of their 4th year, some stallions do it as 3 year olds, but it is quite arduos, so I wouldnt do it again until they were 4.

If you have a look on the Hanoverian Verband website it gives you more comprehensive info about approval via 30 day testing + Bundeschampionat qualification etc & older stallions who already have a competition record.
