The story so far...

DAF was sold as too expensive to run
4x4 bought as 'cheap' alternative
Car promptly developed an exhaust issue
As it is a 3.4 litre V6, it is apparently 'rare' & the right part could only be supplied by Toyota, for £1,200

I tried all the suggestions on here, & the one that worked was...getting one custom-made! The catalytic converter was made & fitted, together with a new O2 sensor for...drum roll...£215, including labour & VAT!! So thank you to whoever made that suggestion!

Very relieved & happy, & it's now running a million times better. Whew! Next crisis, please...!

(The next crisis is that my ex-husband has agreed to a clean break order which involves me keeping the house, so the race is on to get it structurally sound & therefore mortgageable... Should keep me busy for a bit...)

Glad to read that you got the Landcruiser sorted. I was wondering how you had got on with that.

Fingers crossed that the house stuff goes ok and it is plain sailing from now on.

We had a Landcruiser from new and it ended up costing a tidy packet to keep on the road, so much so that my husband chopped it in :( for another car.

Good news you can keep the house :).

Its not uncommon in Land Cruisers!

My parents had to replace theirs (they went down the stainless steel route), and their vehicle has done under 40k miles

Glad you got it sorted

Catembi - as you have run a lorry and are now running a 4x4 it would be interesting if you could monitor the costs of running your 4x4 and report back!

It would be interesting to know which is cheaper. I am torn as to what to get transport wise (have had a lorry and trailer in the past).

Glad it was not £1200!!! eeekk

Okay, I will try to keep a s'sheet of all expenses. I *ought* to start doing that anyway tbh as it's o/h's 'plastering' vehicle (master plasterer) so I need a record so we can claim the appropriate stuff against tax.

The car came with a year's MOT so we are starting from level.

Everything crossed that my s'sheet will have very few entries...!! May 2012 is when the lorry's next MOT was due, so I shall be all smug in May that I haven't got the headache of trying to book the test, get hold of the mechanic, get the mechanic to return calls, pay for the whole mess, blah blah.

So far, I have to say that the car is better on fuel than I was expecting, although obv that's without towing. We took the dogs to the coast in August, which is a fair run from here, & it wasn't that much of a disaster on petrol. It's my first 4x4 & my first automatic, & it's FUN! :-)
