Hi All
I have been toying with getting a sharer for one of my horses and wondered what your thoughts are:
I have a 15.1 heavy cob, who is semi retired due to arthritus, he is an absolute confidence giver and sane. He has been used in riding schools and by the riding for the disabled in the past. Hes not a plod but not a bolter if you know what I mean! hes never bucked or rearer, and is currently ridden by my niece (who is 11) so basically a novice ride, he can be a little bit bolshy on the ground, never kicked or bitten but can be difficult with feet etc, and will take advantage of a total novice handler - in no way dangerous just a pain in the bum!!
Due to his arthritus he can only really be a happy hack, I doubt he will ever jump again and is better on the soft ground than hard.
Being an arthritic he has good days and bad - some days he tears around the field like a stallion and is up for everything, other days he only really wants a wander up the road.
With the financial climate as it is, would people be willing to pay to share this kind of horse? I know that totally sound and more versatile horses arent selling or loaning, I would only be looking for a contribution toward his upkeep, I would want him to stay with me, and Im not looking for help with chores unless the person particularly wanted to!! I have no limit in mind of how many days this person could come down, but I dont want him to be ridden 7 days a week as I need to consider the wear on his joints.
I would need someone who is considerate towards him and will not push him when hes not feeling like a spring chicken, plus I would ideally like someone who would be in his life long term and not get bored after 5 minutes because he cant jump and compete etc.
Ive never shared or loaned out a horse before - are there people out there like this, who would want a horse like this?
The horse is my once in a lifetime horse, I love him to bits, before he was retired we did everything together, hes a real character and a looker!! but I now have a more competative project to ride, as Im not the type of rider happy to walk around the block once a week and so cant dedicate the time I feel he deserves. I want to do whats best for him, ugghh! I dont know if its such a good idea?
