After such a good start, the past few months have been full of down's making me wonder if I really did do the right thing in buying Fred, my ex racer.

Plenty of tears have been shed after hacks spent mostly either with me around his neck or with him doing an impression of a baby giraffe before spinning around whenever anything remotely spooky arises, and sometimes for no reason at all.

Gone was my lovely Freddie whom I knew from racing, no more putting his head in my chest for a snuggle :( After last nights spooky hack and major drama's hosing his back legs and trying to treat the small bits of mudfever that have appeared after all this rain resulted in me walking away before I lost my temper, I was all for selling him on and breaking my heart in the process.

Until this evening....I think we may have had a break through.....I went to the field to catch him and he actually walked up to me  He stood good as gold for me to tack up, bring a mounting block (ok, so it's actually a chair) across and get on.

We then went out for two hours with my OH on the pushbike, and we had no spooking!!! We mooched along with me stirrupless, on the buckle for most of the way. He even popped his head down and worked in a pretty good impression of a contact when I asked nicely.

I'm so glad I persevered, took a deep breath and tried to relax instead of giving up. It has worked, tomorrow we might be back to square one but tonight will be worth it. So for all those who have lost their confidence in themselves or their horse.....give yourself and them a break then keep trying.

Here is the result....

And this is the awkward moment and hour in when I realised I'd achieved what I thought was impossible but completely forgot to do my girth up fully....oh well!

My ex racer has his bad days but not many now. Today was less than perfect, bit 'daft' but not horrid. I think it takes them a while to get their head around things.
