In the hunt for some more challenging XC courses for Fugly, who is thus far finding BE100 XC ridiculously easy, someone mentioned that Hendersyde was a tough one. Knowing that Ian Stark was at the helm and also knowing that it would involve a weekend road trip I didn't need much persuading. Husband (Chef d'Equipe Extrordinaire) was in tow as a penance for forgetting our 5th wedding anniversary last weekend  and he promised to take me out for dinner in Kelso on Saturday night to make amends.

We ventured north with some trepidation - I'm a born and bred Scot who emigrated south 11 years ago and CdEE is a born and bred Yorkshireman who thinks anywhere north of Darlington is marked on the map with 'Here Be Dragons' ;), in fact he was to be heard muttering protective incantations under his breath as we passed over the border in Coldstream :p.

We pitched camp at the same yard as when we stayed for Floors last year with Joss and her OH and we definitely missed their camraderie (and drinking abilities!) this time round. In fact Fugs had the very same stable that Carthorse was in last year - possibly a bad omen?

I got the promised meal (at The Cobbles - lovely, and thanks for the recommendations! :D) after a quick leg-stretch round the XC course. Boy does Mr. Stark like to build big! It was technical without being skinny - in fact barely a skinny to be seen - but the water was very grown up, the last fence was a real worry and every other fence had either a yawning ditch on take-off or falling ground on landing so that you couldn't quite see where you'd be landing when you took off.

Still scratching my head we headed off for a few drinks and a night in the tent, the only problem being the next morning when we came to take it down:

Our terrier had taken up residence in the folded groundsheet and refused to be evicted! But she looked so cute that we didn't mind .

Dressage was a LONG way from our parking spot (5yds from the XC start box - thanks! ), but I got the basics done before being sent in to do a reasonably good test - just ran a bit into the second canter transition.

Got a 6 for this halt - it is a bit overshot though. The comment was 'inattentive'

I got 39, which I was pleased enough with as the only scores that were up were well into the 40s. The marking seemed to get a bit lower later in the day a bit but ain't that always the case?

I was VERY pleased to see FigJam and Now_Loves_Mares appear at just the right moment in the SJ warm-up. CdEE has his uses, but doing practice fences ain't one of them! FJ and NLM 'owned' the fences and I jumped what I wanted to (or what FJ thought I should :p) and went in. The ring was on the biggest slope I've ever seen - you literally couldn't see the fences at the top when you were at the bottom. They'd put 3 downhill uprights in and two doubles. Again, thanks , just the thing for a gangly 17.1 5yo with dubious powers of balance.

This pic is of the last fence but is mostly to show the slope!

HendersydeandJohnsMum0142.jpg

Anyway Fugs was at his most balanced and obliging and shortened beautifully where asked without even falling over. Result - a clear! It's been a long time coming at BE (he's only had one pole in his last 5 non-BE rounds ), but I knew he had it in there somewhere! :D

And so to the XC where, for the first time ever, I felt mildly nervous. Was I asking too much of such a lovely genuine young horse?

To give you an idea this is the second (!) fence just as we're taking off (yup, the photographer's timing's rubbish ), it's a wide oxer of brushes. Bear in mind that the horse is 17.1+....

HendersydeandJohnsMum0152.jpg

Big enough? Anyway we cruised over that, managed to miss CdEE who was crouching in a very inappropriate spot to take the pic, into and out of the woods and over a drop log to the coffin - upright rails, two strides to ditch, one stride to upright rails out - fine. Phew! The next few were simple then a long gallop downhill (I confess to taking a large pull!) to a large log/brush spread with the biggest BE100 open ditch in front that I've ever seen. Lovely jump to that. The water hed 4 elements - hanging log on the lip of a steep, narrow ramp in, step out and 3 strides to a skinnyish barrel. You know the old adage 'never try to see a stride to a step out of water'? Well I didn't, but Fugly did and it was a stride before the one I had in mind . Managed to point roughly at the skinny which he popped then turned sharply for the next few fences.

Very unflattering shot of the bigggest single BE100 fence I've come across:

HendersydeandJohnsMum0172.jpg

Popped very quickly through the second water, ditch palisade and through the wood to the last fence - a log approached off a turn through the trees and up a steep slope with a HUGE drop on landing, then 3 strides on rising ground to an angled upright. I'd seen people come too underpowered at the log and have stops so I perhaps came with a bit too much power on, got a huge, slightly skewiff jump and left the saddle. By some miracle I was re-united with the saddle on the way down and found myself aiming right for part b so kicked on and over the finish line. One very pleased Gamebird!!!! :D

CdEE and Fugly doing what they're both good at:

HendersydeandJohnsMum018.jpg

So I finished in joint 5th place. Sadly my XC time was 4.46 and the other girl's was 4.47 so she was fractionally closer to the OT and edged me into 6th. A shame as the 6th place rosette is a very bright pink tartan - SO not Fugly's colour! ;)

Having been away all weekend I have nothing to offer except for some lovely cold lager and some Tunnock's Tea Cakes (my Scottish heritage hasn't deserted me!). Sorry it was so long - it would appear that I don't know when to shut up! :o

Fabulous report :) and great pics. They are positively pro pics compared to the ones my sis took yesterday (but shhh don't tell her!!!). She assures me the dressage vid is good but I have yet to see it...

Knew Fugs would do you proud. Glad you enjoyed it and were not disappointed.

Yes the Intro box brush fence was probably the biggest we had done too but the course did ride really well I thought. Definitely one of my favourites!

I was SOOOO tempted to come back and watch today too - and show off my impressive bruises :p wish I had known FJ and NLM were going and I could have been persuaded ;)

Hurrah! Congratulations on a great day and a good result :).

But bigger congrats for managing to get a belated anniversary meal, my OH thinks that if he's managed to get past the actual day without doing anything then all bets are off until next year :rolleyes:.

However, you seem to have fallen foul of the enormous horse problem, even though I know that the fences will have been huge on an Ian Stark track Fugly is still making them look very manageable.

Suggest you recruit a short friend and have them stand by fences when you walk the course so you can take pics from all angles and showcase the enormous dimensions! :D:D:p

On a more serious note, Fugs looks amazing, when are you going Novice??:D:p

awwhh poor fugs getting a pink rossie but there again isn't the saying it takes a real man to wear pink ;) (although i hope he wasn't wearing it when he entered back into yorkshire im not sure what the locals would think :p )

glad he found a course that tested him - i know what you mean about those boxes - last year i spent about half and hour convincing myself that the Novice one surely wasn't in the course and then looking for the L :p jumped really we though

and  at the SJ it wasn't like that before!!

Where to next? hopefully Allerton is getting the Beef-up by Mr Stark too so that might be a good one for Mr Fugs

Well done again! :D So lovely to meet you properly and the lovely Fugs of course. :) I am definitely putting Hendersyde on the calendar for next year as it looked a really good, testing PN, damn stoopid Scottish scheduling making too many events come in the one month.

Looking forward to reading his first Novice report. :D

DHB- sorry, should have given you a shout. :( Thought it would have been too much of a trek and you'd have been fed up of the place after spending all Sat there! :o

Now come on FJ you know the Scottish summer only is one month so they need to cram them all in :D You will need to qualify for 100 champs next year - there is your goal!

Congratulations again! We did love the Fugs (and the mega-cute dogs, even though the terrier couldn't quite bring himself to leave the car to say hello :p). I hope Fugly managed to catch up on his sleep, bless him.

Will try to be chattier next time (read less hungover and on more than 4 hours sleep)

DarkhorseB, was kind of a last minute thing, we will let you know next time!

Aw come on, never mind the horses. Surely someone's got to comment on how cute Pippin the terrier is? :(

Teach, we did have a fab time. Really enjoyed it and it was worth the trip, though at only just over 3.5hrs it wasn't as far as I'd remembered.

Seriously DHB? You have worse photos than those? Did you write a report on your fabby result? I'm off for a look.....

Matafleur - having the Small Coloured One (15.1) did wonders for making fences look huge. Sadly Fugly is huge, I'm nearly 6ft and CdEE is 6'1ish so we're not exactly a family of pygmies (except Pippin of course ;)). Maybe I could hire a small child to do the job? I'd LOVE to take Fugs Novice and would feel quite happy too, especially round some of the kinder ones. However I feel that he's still growing into himself and what's the rush? There were only two 5yos in our PN section today (the other finished 4th), let alone in the novice.

Charlotte125/lui23456 - Beckwithshaw. It might look a bit tidgy in comparison! Would have done the 5yo class at Richmond but have to work that weekend and am giving Fugs 4 or 5 days off now.

Langside - oooh, good news about Allerton, might pencil it in. It's pretty much my closest event anyway so not a bad idea. I complemented Mr Stark on his course today (but also mentioned that a green wobbly 5yo had made mincemeat of it! ;)). I like it when they build 'em bold. Especially once I'm over the finish line! :p

FJ/DHB - that stoopid 1sec cost me a place at next year's Scottish Champs. Boo. Hopefully we'll be on to bigger and better things by then anyway. Looks fun though, why can't we have a Yorkshire Champs? :(

OMG now you could surely not be comparing the poxy little ENGLISH county of Yorkshire to Scotland could you Gamebird?!?:p;)

Awww, well done today!! You look just fab in your pics (loving your dog!). I never made it down as had folk viewing the house plus my massage girl was down doing my bunch. You got a super day for it, despite the rubbish forecast!

And thank you for confirming how horrible fence 14 is!! Just as well it jumps better than it looks.

You missed a treat not seeing Dark Horse's facial accessory, but if we're really lucky she might just post a wee fotie!!!

Glad The Cobbles was sufficient for evening sustenance and you enjoyed your wee trip over the border!

(

I must be a Big fan of Mr Starks course too seems Scone and Hendersyde are my faves but don't you be telling him you made mincemeat out of them there big enough already for big-brown-tanks like my beastie without you hinting they could be harder!!!
Might see you at Beckwithshaw

Sounds like a great weekend. Well done on the placing shame about the colour of the rosette though.

Fugs looks fab in the pics, and I agree your dog is really cute:)

I said that to n_l_m when walking round, it would be fab to qualify and run at that next year as they had a few additional fences on the XC to beef it up and it looked fun. Trouble is getting the top 5 BE100 place to qualify in the first place...! ;)

Never mind that. I saw her eyeing up the Novice track :p

I said if it was pick a fence, there'd be a few I'd take on. Not so much the flowery trakhener (although take off the flowers and maybe...!) or log-drop though!

GB- Pippin is indeed mega cute. :) Surely it is so obvious it doesn't need saying?! And why no Willow pics, she is just as cute.

GB - have put said photos on FB so you can judge for yourself ;)
You will also see very bad make up job which I could not remove for SJ  In fact remnants are still there this morning GULP! What have I done to my lovely boy :eek:
FJ don't let Mr Figjam see. He will be quaking in his tog boots :p

DHB- just had a look at the pics,

@ poor B's make up! :p He looks like he's been nosing around in the chimney?! ;) But hey, worth it for a few extra dressage marks?! :D

Mr FJ will indeed need to up his game next time out, I'll be sure to let him know...! :p :)

I know I think I am going to have to get some white make up now
It is Supreme Product stuff any idea how to remove? However we were 5th or 6th after dressage and no nose tilting comments so result!!!;):p

Anyway just to prove it is not just his nose that got b8ggered up and for NJs entertainment again ;)

See, I'm just jealous coz the last time I jumped The Ginger Princess I smashed my nose big time - blood everywhere (stains eventually removed from saddlecloth!), seeing stars and generally in absolute agony. What did I have to show for it - absolutely diddly squat! No bruises, no nothing! I had to suffer a month of pain with nothing to show for it!!!!!

So, I was just majorily impressed with your colouring! ;-)

Fab report, Fugly looks great and a huge well done on a very good result especially given those plastic poles, and the slope!

Sounds like Hendersyde will be a good one for next year, shame I missed it but might head to Allerton now :).

GB, I am sure I saw you today, I recognise the boots. Unless someone had the very same ones of course. Does Fugly have green travel boots to match his fleece? Your wee dog is a cutey :D

N-L-M aww didn't see you. Did you get the schedule for our showjumping I stuck in your letterbox and are you coming?? Oops Blair weekend though.

Was really lucky to meet Ian Stark though, he was judging our Festival of the ex racehorse masterclass. Nice man.
